A beginning like light slowly entering the day
Sometimes something does not begin as an event. More like a sunrise that has not yet decided to reveal itself immediately. At first, there is still darkness. Not as something threatening, but as a state that simply does not yet know it is about to change. Everything feels fixed, almost finished. And then – almost unnoticed – something shifts.
Not abruptly. Not clearly defined. More in small gradations, as if the light is cautiously testing whether it is allowed to stay.
First only an edge of brightness. Then more. And at some point, there is a change that, in hindsight, feels as if it had been there all along. Maybe that is the moment we later call love. Not the beginning of a feeling. But the beginning of a shift.
When hindsight is clearer than the moment itself
In truth, for me, nothing has simply “worked out.”
No family, no children, none of those clear life lines that others eventually use to anchor their lives. Rather a sequence of attempts, approaches, decisions that felt right in the moment and only later appeared in a different light. And perhaps that is exactly what changes the way you see things.
You begin to believe less in the grand narratives, in that clean image of “it worked” or “it didn’t work.” Instead, something unfinished remains. Something that cannot be closed, but rather continues, quieter now, yet still present.
Infatuation has a light that blinds
Infatuation is rarely quiet. It does not arrive cautiously. It pushes itself to the front, as if asking everything else to step aside for a moment. Suddenly, every detail gains weight. A message becomes meaning. A glance becomes a story. A pause between replies becomes an entire internal monologue.
And that is where its power lies – and its deception. Everything becomes larger than it is. Everything is charged before it has ever taken a stable form. Even uncertainty loses its role as a warning sign and becomes something to interpret, to turn over, to reshape into something meaningful.
One no longer lives in what is, but in what it could mean. And in that state, intensity feels like proof. Even though it is often only an amplifier. Not evidence.
And then there is this other form
Love, in comparison, feels almost inconspicuous. Not because it is less deep, but because it is less demanding. It does not require constant confirmation, no permanent inner echo. It does not stay in the foreground; it often remains exactly where life simply continues. Maybe that is why it is so difficult to recognize. It does not drown anything out.
It does not wait for grand moments to become visible. It reveals itself in the in-between spaces. In what is not spectacular, but still carries weight. And often, one only understands this when trying to recall something that was never loud – but still remained.
A scene that did not seem important – and perhaps was precisely because of that
Someone once said he had long confused love with movement.
The more restless something was, the more real it felt. The more uncertainty, the more meaning. As if love had to be something that constantly proves itself, constantly reignites itself, constantly stands at the edge of being lost. Today, he describes it differently. Not as depth, but as restlessness in disguise. At some point, he said, he realized that it was less the person that occupied him, and more the state that relationship created within him. That constant inner oscillation between hope and doubt.
Maybe that was the real difference. Not everything that feels intense leads to closeness. Some things only lead to motion. And motion alone is not a home.
When two people love each other and it still is not enough
There is another truth that cannot be neatly resolved. That two people can truly mean a great deal to each other and still not end up together. Not because something was wrong. Not because it was not real. But because love does not guarantee a shared direction. Sometimes it is not a lack of feeling, but a lack of simultaneity. Different speeds. Different phases of life. Decisions coming from the outside that shift everything on the inside. Studies, work, transitions, upheavals – things that no feeling can override, even when it seems completely clear.
And that is exactly what makes it so difficult. Because something remains that was real, but never found a place. This realization first feels like a break. Later more like a quiet form of acceptance.
Perhaps love is a slow form of understanding rather than an answer
Love does not unfold in a straight line.
At the beginning, it is often a kind of possibility. A feeling that does not yet know what it is allowed to become. Later it becomes more concrete, but also more vulnerable to reality. And eventually it shifts into everyday life, where it no longer needs to be constantly explained, but simply continues or fails. Sometimes it happens quickly. Sometimes it takes years to even recognize it. And sometimes it ends before both people even understand that it has begun.
In between lies no clear sequence, but rather a chain of asymmetries. People do not feel equally at the same time. They do not understand equally at the same time. And they do not change at the same pace. Maybe that is exactly the point where love either fails or grows – not because of the feeling itself, but because of the time it is given.
And sometimes also because of the time it is not given.
What does not stop moving
Love is one of those mysteries that are difficult to grasp.
There are countless variations, and how a beginning love ends depends on countless factors. In essence, there are wishes, dreams, longings for the perfect personal relationship – but never guarantees. Maybe love really is just a chemical reaction, or maybe there are unknown variables in the equation that we keep trying to explain, and still fail to fully understand. And perhaps love is not only the big feeling, but also the willingness to stay when the big feeling has already transformed into something quieter. Not as a sacrifice of the self, but as a decision for the shared space, even when it does not fit perfectly.
Because love is not an automatic process that happens simply because one once felt it strongly. It needs movement, but also patience. Closeness, but also space. And sometimes the ability to overlook things that seem large in the moment, but become small in the larger picture.
Not in the sense of indifference. But in the sense of a quiet maturity that understands that no human being fits completely – and that precisely in this lies perhaps the very space in which love becomes possible at all.
