How the people of Miniatur Wunderland turned an idea into a world
Finished works can impress me, and sometimes even overwhelm me.
Even so, my attention rarely remains fixed for long on something that already stands before me in its completed form. After a while, I want to know how it came into being. Who had the first thought? Which decisions had to be made when no one could yet see the result? What went wrong, and why did people continue nevertheless?
Perhaps this is because a finished work conceals almost the whole story of its own creation. We see a landscape, a building, a film or a book, and at first we encounter only the state in which everything appears to fit together. The rejected designs are missing. The conversations have fallen silent. Little remains visible of the doubts, the wrong decisions and the attempts that led nowhere.
Yet this is where an essential part of the story lies. Exceptional work rarely emerges from a single great moment. It grows through countless actions, corrections and decisions whose importance only becomes clear later. Some people devote years of their lives to an idea without knowing at the beginning whether it will ever become something capable of lasting. Others join them, change it and bring abilities that no one had imagined would be needed.
Many years ago, I first became aware of Miniatur Wunderland.
At first, it was the model itself that fascinated me. I had already seen other model railways and could easily understand why people devoted themselves to this passion. Tracks run through landscapes they have created themselves. Trains connect places that previously existed only in the imagination. From wood, plaster, paint and technology, a small world emerges with rules of its own.
Miniatur Wunderland surpassed everything I had encountered in this field before. Its scale was impressive, its technical processes seemed almost unreal, and stories appeared to be hidden everywhere, far more than anyone could possibly take in at first glance. Cities, mountains, harbours and airports were not merely scenery for passing trains. They possessed a life of their own.
To this day, I do not know this place through personal experience. I have never walked through its rooms or stood before the landscapes about which I am writing. My picture of it has formed over many years through documentaries, reports, interviews and the numerous films in which those responsible for Miniatur Wunderland and the people working there reveal how their world is created.
That distance had an unexpected effect. I watched some recordings several times, listened to conversations again and followed developments over a long period. At first, my attention was drawn to the finished worlds. Later, other things remained in my mind. A passing remark about a technical difficulty occupied me longer than the finished model. A casually mentioned mistake sometimes revealed more about the work than a spectacular opening.
Gradually, my perspective shifted. The trains, landscapes and tiny figures lost none of their fascination. Yet they became visible traces of a much larger process. Every moving vehicle must first have existed as a problem. Every mountain was once a drawing, a conversation or a vague idea. Behind every scene stood people who had decided which detail was necessary and which would make the small world less believable.
I began to wonder how many different abilities had to come together for this model to continue growing over decades. Model making alone could never have been enough. It required electronics, mechanics, software, lighting, sound, design, woodworking and forms of knowledge for which there may not even have been suitable job titles. Above all, it required people who were willing to connect their work with the work of others.
This also changed the question that accompanied me through the many films and conversations. I no longer wanted merely to understand how an extraordinary model railway was built. I became interested in the conditions under which people could work together on an idea for so many years without allowing routine, financial pressure or fear of failure to drain it of its strength.
A company of this size must operate economically. It has to pay wages, finance investments, attract visitors and make decisions that cannot be based on enthusiasm alone. Money provides space, materials and working time. It cannot create a sense of why an effort is worthwhile. Nor can it persuade people to spend years searching for a solution when a simpler version would already be sufficient.
From the public statements and the development of Miniatur Wunderland, I gained the impression that economic stability forms a necessary foundation there, but does not determine the entire direction. Growth does not appear to derive its value solely from the model becoming larger or attracting more visitors. What matters is whether the project can preserve what made its success possible in the first place.
Rapid growth is not necessarily difficult. New areas can be planned, additional attractions developed and proven processes repeated. What is harder is growth that does not gradually wear away the character of a place. Every expansion increases the demands. More employees require structures, larger projects demand more reliable planning, and technical failures become more expensive. What could once be decided spontaneously must later be coordinated among many people.
I therefore became increasingly concerned with the question of how a company can grow without losing its own way of working beneath the weight of its success. How can it preserve freedom for unusual ideas when deadlines, budgets and daily operations become ever more important? How can it prevent a living workshop from turning into nothing more than a well organised production line for things that have already proved successful?
At Miniatur Wunderland, this very attempt seemed visible to me. Not unrestricted growth for its own sake, but a development that repeatedly had to examine what it could carry without surrendering its character. Healthy growth then means more than remaining financially stable. It means bringing pace, scale and ambition into a balance that does not reduce the people behind the work to interchangeable components in an increasingly efficient system.
Whether this has succeeded everywhere and at all times is not something I can judge from the outside. Long term success is not proof of a flawless company culture. Miniatur Wunderland has also experienced difficult periods, conflicts, delays and decisions whose value can only be assessed in retrospect.
That is precisely why this place interests me. Not because everything there was done correctly, but because over many years it has been possible to observe a recognisable way of dealing with ideas, problems and people.
A Brief Stop in Zurich
The beginning of this story can be told surprisingly quickly. In the summer of 2000, Frederik Braun stopped in front of a model railway shop while walking through Zurich. The sight awakened memories of his childhood. From that moment came an idea that sounded both simple and audacious: why not build the largest model railway in the world?
Many ideas begin in this way. An image, a memory or a chance encounter sets something in motion. For a brief moment, anything seems possible. Usually, that feeling disappears as soon as everyday life returns with its objections. We think about the cost, the lack of experience and the many reasons why something might fail.
Frederik Braun did not allow the thought to disappear. That same day, he tried to reach his brother Gerrit. The idea was already large in his mind, even though there were no premises and no plans. All that existed was the conviction that a model railway could become something capable of bringing people from far away to Hamburg.
For me, however, the real story does not begin with Frederik’s idea alone. It begins with his brother’s response.
Gerrit Braun did not simply adopt the enthusiasm. He asked whether the idea was technically possible, what it would cost and whether enough people would really travel to Hamburg to see such a model. He was not searching for weaknesses in order to end the idea as quickly as possible. He began examining the obstacles that might stand in the way of making it real.
That distinction matters. Scepticism can destroy an idea before it has taken any shape at all. But it can also prevent enthusiasm from mistaking itself for reality. Gerrit’s questions forced the thought to become more resilient. Whatever was technically impossible had to be changed. Whatever could not support itself financially needed a different foundation.
At first, Frederik’s imagination and Gerrit’s scrutiny seem to be opposites. In reality, they complemented one another. The idea was given enough room to remain large, but it also had to face the questions that would determine whether it could survive. Imagination was allowed to provide the starting point. Reality was still given a voice.
Stephan Hertz belonged to this circle from the beginning. He had already worked with the brothers and brought entrepreneurial experience without which the idea would hardly have developed into a lasting company. In public accounts, he appears less often at the centre than Frederik and Gerrit. That alone is a reminder that not every essential contribution is equally visible.
A project needs people who express ideas and others who search for technical answers. It also needs organisation, continuity and daily responsibility for all those processes that no one notices as long as they function properly. Very often, it is this unspectacular work that decides whether a great vision survives its first months or remains capable of carrying people for many years.
The three men thought differently. That was not a flaw that had to be overcome through constant agreement. Their differences formed part of the project’s foundation. Frederik opened a space in which something previously unimaginable could be considered. Gerrit examined what could survive technically and financially. Stephan helped turn both movements into an entrepreneurial reality.
This did not mean that one of them possessed the correct view and the others simply followed. A great idea does not require people who agree on every question. It requires people whose different thoughts are directed towards the same purpose.
During the weeks that followed, the spontaneous idea became a plan. Premises had to be found, costs calculated and initial estimates of visitor numbers developed. Nothing had yet been built. There were no landscapes, no moving trains and no evidence that people would actually come. Every step depended on assumptions whose accuracy could only be tested later.
The success that followed makes it easy to view the beginning as the logical first chapter of a familiar story. But in the year 2000, an enormous model railway in Hamburg’s historic warehouse district was not a proven concept. No one could point to a comparable enterprise and explain which decisions would reliably lead to success. The founders had to judge something for which no established standard existed.
That was precisely what made it difficult. Anyone starting a business based on a familiar model can draw on the experience of others. At Miniatur Wunderland, many answers had to emerge during the work itself. Even the people who would later build it could hardly possess training designed specifically for such a project. For something genuinely new, there was neither a complete construction plan nor a suitable profession.
The decision therefore demanded more than entrepreneurial courage. It required a willingness to enter a long process of learning. The founders did not merely have to build the model. They had to discover how such a model could be constructed, operated and continually developed.
In that sense, the beginning already contained what would later fascinate me about the entire story. A vision was allowed to remain large enough to inspire people. At the same time, it was examined, changed and connected with other abilities. No one person possessed everything required to make it real.
The rooms were still empty. Yet the most important foundation was already there: three people who did not think alike and who, precisely because of that, were able to begin something that none of them could have created alone.
There Were No Suitable Professions for Something New
The empty rooms in Hamburg’s warehouse district were only one of the challenges facing the founders. An even more difficult question must have been who would build the world that, until then, existed only in their minds.
For an ordinary model railway, they could have turned to people who had been familiar with the hobby for years. Miniatur Wunderland demanded far more. Landscapes had to be shaped, kilometres of track laid, vehicles set in motion and thousands of technical processes connected with one another. Buildings were meant to look convincing, lighting had to create atmosphere, and none of it could function only for a brief demonstration. The model was expected to operate for many hours every day.
There was no profession that combined all the abilities required for this work. According to the official account, around 95 per cent of the early team did not come from traditional model making. Among those who later worked on the landscapes and scenes were carpenters, dental technicians, commercial employees and many others whose original professions initially appeared to have little connection with the construction of an enormous miniature world.
In retrospect, this mixture seems almost inevitable. At the beginning, it was a risk. No one could know whether people from different technical and craft backgrounds would be able to combine their experience in a way that produced a shared method of working. Each person brought knowledge, but no one possessed a complete set of instructions for the whole.
Perhaps that was one of the first important decisions. Those responsible did not search exclusively for people who could already do exactly what was needed. Such people could hardly have existed. They appear to have looked instead for ability, curiosity and a willingness to learn something for which no proven path was available.
A dental technician knows different materials and works with a different form of precision from a carpenter. An electronics specialist sees a different problem in a movement than a model maker. To a programmer, a landscape may initially consist of states, signals and sequences. A designer thinks about colours, proportions and lines of sight. Each person looks at the same section from a different distance.
Under such conditions, collaboration means more than dividing tasks. The different abilities alter the idea itself. A technical possibility can expand the design. A visual concept can force the technology to search for a solution it would never have developed without that demand. The result does not emerge because everyone quietly completes an isolated part. It grows where professions meet.
In many of the examples shown publicly, the model makers also seem to do more than simply carry out predetermined plans. Within an established framework, they create their own scenes, develop small stories and leave behind an individual signature. This does not produce a completely unrestricted world in which everyone can build independently of the whole. A model of this size requires planning, responsibilities and limits. Yet within those limits, there appears to be room for a thought that was absent from every previous design.
That explains part of the extraordinary density visitors later experience. The many small scenes do not feel like variations produced from a single design manual. They contain different forms of humour, observation and life. Some are quiet, others absurd. Some reveal themselves immediately, while others may only be discovered after several visits.
Individuality is difficult to command. A company can ask its employees to be creative while removing every opportunity for creativity through time pressure, exact instructions and constant supervision. Creativity then remains nothing more than a word in a corporate brochure.
At Miniatur Wunderland, the attitude becomes visible less through such words than through decisions. An original scene requires time. An unusual detail may make no measurable contribution to visitor numbers. Often, no one can even determine how many people notice it at all. And yet it is built.
There is an economic contradiction in this, but it does not have to remain a contradiction. Something whose value can hardly be calculated in isolation may, in its totality, define the value of the entire place. No visitor travels to Hamburg because of one tiny figure. But if all these personal and apparently uneconomical decisions were missing, what remained would be a large model from which something essential had disappeared.
Half the Time Would Not Have Produced the Same Result
In their published company philosophy, the founders speak with surprising openness about this conflict. They describe themselves as passionate hobbyists and, at the same time, as entrepreneurs responsible for a financially viable company. Success is not rejected. Without it, existing jobs could not be protected and new sections could not be financed.
The real question is what may be sacrificed in order to achieve that success.
At one point, the founders introduce a hypothetical thought. Management consultants might well conclude that a comparable model could be built with half the number of people in half the time. Their response is not that this would be technically impossible. They write, in essence, that such an approach would lose the love, dedication and individuality that define the work. The result would no longer be their Wunderland.
This idea is sometimes retold as though an actual consultation had taken place. The research conducted for this article found no evidence of such a meeting. In any case, the consultants are not what matters. What matters is the conflict between two different aims that the example makes visible.
Time, staffing costs and construction progress can be measured. Care, identification and the personal signature of an individual do not fit easily into a spreadsheet. Yet these are precisely the things that determine whether a landscape has merely been built correctly or whether visitors discover something in it that touches them.
Efficiency is therefore not without value. Without sensible processes, a project of this size would collapse beneath the weight of its own effort. But efficiency has no purpose of its own. It is a tool. Once it becomes the only measure of success, it may begin to remove the very qualities it was originally meant to support.
A small scene can be produced more quickly if its design has already been decided. It becomes faster still if the same forms are used repeatedly. Buildings can be standardised, processes unified and decisions centralised. On paper, this creates a cleaner system. At the same time, the deviations that later catch the eye begin to disappear.
Miniatur Wunderland does not feel human because mistakes or irregularities have been added deliberately. It feels human because many people have worked on it and their different ways of seeing have not been completely removed from the result.
This attitude becomes increasingly difficult to preserve within a successful company. As its reputation grows, expectations rise. New sections are expected to be larger, technically more ambitious and more impressive than those that came before. Deadlines gain importance, investments become greater and delays more expensive. Under such conditions, it would be understandable to standardise every part of the work more rigorously.
Yet some of the decisions made at Miniatur Wunderland point in the opposite direction. They allow more time even when a faster result would be possible. They begin again although what already exists still works. They continue pursuing an idea even when no one can say for years whether it will ever become reliable enough for everyday operation.
Why a Successful Fairground Was Allowed to Disappear
For almost eighteen years, the fairground was one of the most popular areas of the model. Its rides moved, its lights flashed, and for countless visitors it had long since become a familiar part of Miniatur Wunderland.
It had not failed. There was no obvious reason to demolish it.
That is precisely why its story reveals so much.
For years, the technical team had wanted to rethink the entire area from the ground up. Since the first fairground had been built, the technical possibilities had changed considerably. The knowledge of the people working there had grown as well. Movements could become more realistic, rides could respond in more complex ways, and lighting, control systems and mechanics could be connected with far greater precision.
The old fairground could have been modernised gradually. Individual attractions could have been replaced, control systems improved and visible signs of age removed. That would have required less effort and would largely have preserved the familiar area. Instead, the decision was made to begin again.
A successful section was removed because the idea of what might take its place had become stronger than the security of what already existed. This did not turn the old fairground into a poor piece of work in retrospect. It had served its purpose for many years and delighted countless people. Without the experience gained from that first fairground, the new one would probably never have been possible.
I like this distinction. Something can be respected and still be left behind. Progress does not have to diminish what came before in order to justify itself. An earlier solution may have been good and yet, at some point, fall behind the abilities of the people who learned from it.
The new fairground became a place where experience could turn back into curiosity. People who already knew how to build functioning attractions had to ask themselves new questions for which no reliable answers existed. The success of the past did not protect them from the uncertainty of another beginning.
This may be one of the most difficult forms of development. Solving a problem that causes visible disruption every day is comparatively easy. It is far harder to invest energy, time and money in something no one is complaining about. You have to recognise what does not yet exist while everyone else remains satisfied with what is already there.
Anyone looking only at the result will later see a larger, more dynamic and technically more impressive fairground. Behind it, however, stands a decision that cannot be expressed through the number of attractions it contains.
What had already succeeded was not allowed to become the limit of what could still be imagined.
Eleven Years for a Race That Never Runs the Same Way Twice
The finished racing cars are tiny. They accelerate, brake, change their line and overtake one another. For the visitor, a race lasts only a short time. It took around eleven years before it could happen in this way.
Miniatur Wunderland’s existing car system was not suitable for the task. Road vehicles can be guided through the model along predetermined routes. A Formula 1 race requires something else. The cars must react quickly, use different lines and be able to overtake one another. If they always followed the same route and the same sequence, visitors would not see a race. They would see a repeated choreography.
This led to the development of a technical system for which no ready made solution could be purchased. Moving magnetic fields are generated beneath the track. Inside the tiny vehicles are special arrangements of magnets known as Halbach arrays. Thousands of sensors detect the cars’ positions and monitor numerous processes. A control system continuously calculates which vehicle should accelerate, brake or change its line.
The physical principles behind this were not invented at Miniatur Wunderland. Moving magnetic fields and Halbach arrays were already known. The achievement lay in combining these possibilities in a new way, reducing them to a scale of 1:87 and making them usable for freely moving racing cars.
A test setup can function for a few minutes. A system that operates in front of visitors every day must meet entirely different demands. The cars cannot react reliably only under ideal conditions. Sensors, controls and mechanics must work together for many hours. At high speed, even a small deviation can affect the entire race immediately.
This distinction is easy to miss from the outside. A technical idea is not yet a solution capable of surviving everyday use. Years may lie between the first successful experiment and reliable operation. Every improvement has to be tested again because it may create a new problem elsewhere. A faster car may require more precise positioning. Greater freedom in choosing a line increases the number of situations to which the system must respond.
The length of this development is therefore more than evidence of persistence. It shows how far an idea can grow when people refuse to replace its most difficult demands with a simpler illusion.
The racing cars could have been placed on fixed tracks. With skilful staging, even that might have produced an impressive scene. But the team wanted something else. The races were meant to remain open enough for the outcome not to look identical every time. The cars were supposed to react to one another and use different lines.
That changed the nature of the challenge. It was no longer enough to represent movement. The system had to create an event whose individual details had not been completely determined in advance, not even by the people who developed it.
A visitor may later see nothing more than two cars moving through a bend. They know neither the number of sensors nor the years of development behind them. That is not a failure of communication. The technology reaches its goal precisely when it no longer needs to explain itself. Magnetic fields, calculations and countless experiments become, for a few moments, a race.
Until shortly before the opening, the public could still see that reliable long term operation remained difficult. Gerrit Braun and the people involved did not wait until everything had succeeded before presenting a polished story of the path towards success. Through the published diaries and films, viewers could follow problems over a long period whose causes were not always immediately understood.
That is unusual. Companies like to present the finished solution and explain afterwards which obstacles were overcome along the way. By then, every difficulty already possesses meaning because the outcome is known.
During the development of Formula 1, that outcome remained uncertain for a long time. No one could say with confidence whether every problem would be solved in time.
The audience therefore saw more than the creation of a technical system. They shared an uncertainty that could not yet be turned into a heroic story.
The Unfinished Was Allowed to Remain Visible
Transparency is often confused with the promise to reveal everything. That is not what is meant here. No outsider knows every decision, conflict and working condition at Miniatur Wunderland. Even the many videos can show only selected moments.
What is striking, however, is the kind of moments that are shown. Damaged components, failed attempts, faults that are difficult to locate and temporary solutions do not disappear entirely from the public account. Employees explain what they are working on even when they have not yet solved the problem.
This changes the relationship with the finished work. Anyone who has followed its development over the years does not see only a technical attraction in a moving racing car. They may remember an early attempt in which the car lost its line, a fault shortly before the opening or a moment when those involved did not know how to continue.
The value of the result grows through this knowledge. Perfection often creates distance. Visible development creates closeness because it does not make the achievement appear like a sudden miracle.
The open control centre inside Miniatur Wunderland has a similar effect. Visitors can see that this apparently independent world has to be monitored, maintained and repaired again and again. Trains stop, vehicles require assistance, and behind the calm operation people are working to preserve the illusion.
The technology becomes visible in one place without destroying the sense of wonder elsewhere. Perhaps it even strengthens it. A functioning world is impressive. Recognising how much attention is needed to keep it functioning changes the way we look at it.
When an Invention Finds a New Purpose
A technical development does not always end where it was originally intended to. Sometimes, years later, it solves a problem that did not even exist when the work began.
While trying to create a realistically moving roller coaster, the team once again encountered the limits of the small scale. A real roller coaster cannot simply be reduced in size. Mass, acceleration, friction and speed no longer relate to one another in the same way. What remains safely on the rails in reality because of its weight may become unstable or unconvincing as a tiny model.
Earlier attempts had not produced a solution that met the team’s own standards. At some point, the idea could have been abandoned as technically unreasonable. A roller coaster was not necessary for Miniatur Wunderland to feel complete. No visitor would have missed it without ever knowing that the attempts had taken place.
But ideas do not always disappear simply because they cannot be realised at a particular moment. Sometimes they remain in people’s minds and wait for something elsewhere to change.
Axel recognised that technology developed for Formula 1 might also be useful for the roller coaster. Together with Thomas, he began pursuing the idea. A solution originally created for freely moving racing cars was given a second purpose for which it had never been intended.
Such transfers rarely emerge from a straight line of planning. They require knowledge not to remain trapped inside the project for which it was created. Someone has to recognise a connection between two problems that, at first glance, appear to have little in common.
Even then, the roller coaster was not suddenly complete. The new approach merely opened a possible direction. Once again, the team had to build, measure, alter and discard. Some solutions worked in one part of the track and failed in another. Movements had to be technically reliable while also looking convincing.
The same sober attitude appears in conversations about this work as in those about Formula 1. The people involved speak about dead ends without later turning them into moments of great revelation. A failed attempt may have been necessary. But it may also have been nothing more than an error that consumed time.
Not every mistake leads to a better idea. That would be a romantic view of development. What matters is whether people can examine a mistake openly enough to understand its cause. Only then is there a possibility of learning from it.
Trust Reveals Itself Only When the Outcome Is Uncertain
Companies like to speak about trust. As long as everything is working, the word remains comfortable. Its meaning becomes visible only when an idea demands time, money and human effort without any guarantee that it will succeed.
The development of Formula 1 took around eleven years. Work continued on the roller coaster for a long period even though no one could say at the beginning whether a convincing solution would ever emerge. The new fairground replaced an area that had already been successful. None of these decisions can be explained by the desire for short term security alone.
Trust does not mean that every idea is realised. Miniatur Wunderland probably rejects far more ideas than it builds. Nor can the examples shown publicly prove that every employee in every department experiences the same degree of freedom. A large company contains different areas, demands and individual experiences.
What can be recognised, however, is a recurring pattern. In many projects, employees do not appear merely as people carrying out instructions. They contribute their own solutions, transfer technologies to new tasks and explain their work themselves. Good ideas are not assumed to exist only at the top of the company.
This kind of trust does not release anyone from responsibility. It increases it. Anyone given room to pursue an idea must also be willing to have it tested, to reveal problems and to abandon a chosen path when it no longer leads anywhere. In a model as complex as this one, freedom without feedback would quickly become chaos.
Trust and criticism therefore do not stand in opposition to one another. As with Frederik and Gerrit, their strength lies precisely in their connection. An idea first needs someone willing to express it even though not every answer is available. It then needs people who can recognise its weaknesses and are allowed to change it.
Perhaps this is the link between the founders and the technical projects that came later. What began between three people in the year 2000 is repeated in another form inside the workshops. One person imagines something. Another recognises a problem. A third brings knowledge from an area that was not originally involved. The idea returns from every conversation in a changed form.
In the end, it no longer has a single creator. It has passed through many minds and hands. It has been reduced, expanded, rejected, revived and translated into technology. That is precisely why a thought can become something capable of surviving daily operation.
From the outside, visitors later see a fairground, a race or perhaps one day a roller coaster. The real achievement remains largely invisible. It lies in a way of working that gives an idea enough time to move away from its original form.
Sometimes an idea needs this long detour before it can reveal what was hidden inside it.
When a Work No Longer Belongs to Its Makers Alone
To this day, I have never visited Miniatur Wunderland myself. I do not know its rooms from my own experience, and I have never stood before one of its landscapes while people beside me pointed towards tiny details.
Everything I know about such encounters comes from documentaries, reports and the many films recorded there over the years.
That distance cannot be turned into personal experience, and I do not want to pretend otherwise. Even so, some images have remained with me as though I had watched them myself for a long time. Not because they were spectacular. Quite the opposite. They were usually brief moments at the edge of the model in which, for an instant, it became visible what this small world can awaken in people.
In one recording, a child discovers a tiny scene. The child points towards it, and the father bends down to look more closely. While he still appears to be explaining something, the child’s attention has already moved on. Another detail has been found, and now the adult is being pulled towards it.
For a few seconds, the roles change.
The father is not showing the child the world. They are discovering it together.
It is an insignificant movement, one that probably takes place countless times every day. That is precisely why it remains in the mind. Children do not look at a miniature world according to its technical importance. They do not distinguish between a development that took years and a simple everyday scene. A departing aeroplane may hold their attention, and only moments later a figure walking a dog at the edge of the model may become more interesting.
Adults have often learned to look at the largest things first. They search for familiar buildings, technical highlights and those scenes they have already heard about. Children do not yet know this hierarchy. To them, a barely visible detail can have the same value as an entire city. In their attention, size is not a measure of importance.
Perhaps that is precisely why adults become more curious again in this environment. The child is not merely pointing at a figure. The gesture reminds the person beside them that perception does not have to follow a fixed order.
In another recording, an older visitor stops in front of a scene. She barely moves and seems, for a moment, to have forgotten everything around her. Eventually, she turns towards the person beside her. He nods, they both smile and begin speaking quietly.
I do not know what they are talking about. The small landscape may remind them of a journey, a city in which they once lived or a person who has suddenly become present again in that moment. Their conversation may equally have very little to do with the scene itself.
For me, that uncertainty belongs to the image. There is no reason to complete the moment with an invented story.
What matters is only that something has happened. An artificially created world has touched a memory, a thought or a feeling in a real person that its makers could neither know nor plan in advance.
The people in Miniatur Wunderland look at the same landscapes and yet do not encounter the same work. Each person brings something with them. Memory changes the way they see, as do age, origin and all those experiences of which the people beside us know nothing.
For one person, a harbour is a technical facility. For another, it recalls departure or return. A mountain range may remain nothing more than landscape or bring back a moment from childhood. Some visitors watch the trains, others the buildings, vehicles or tiny human scenes. Others do not look for anything particular at first. They allow the abundance to affect them until their attention settles somewhere by itself.
The makers can decide what they place before these people. They build roads, shape mountains, construct buildings and create movement. They determine where a light appears and which figure stands in a place that may barely be noticed.
What happens inside an individual visitor is no longer under their control.
A painter eventually adds the final brushstroke. Their work on the picture is then complete. Its effect, however, begins only when another person stands before it. That person may recognise something the artist intended. They may just as easily develop a thought that no one considered during its creation.
The picture remains the same.
Its meaning does not.
At Miniatur Wunderland, this encounter is repeated every day in countless variations. Millions of people have looked at the same mountains, cities and transport systems over the years. Yet very few of them are likely to have taken the same memories home.
The place does not give them a uniform experience. It offers them a world in which each person finds a path of their own. The makers can create what is visible. What people carry away from it belongs to them alone.
The Grand Scenes and the Life at Their Edges
At first glance, the effect seems easy to explain. The model is vast, technically extraordinary and filled with an almost unmanageable number of details. Trains cross landscapes, ships move across stretches of water, and aeroplanes take off and land. Cities glow at night, vehicles follow their roads, and small events unfold everywhere.
Yet abundance alone does not create a living world. Too many details can diminish one another. When everything demands attention at the same time, very little remains in the memory. Miniatur Wunderland appears to have found another way. The grand scenes provide orientation. Life often emerges at their edges.
A mountain landscape first draws the eye through its height and scale. Only later does one discover a small cabin, a group of hikers or a figure standing in a place that serves no technical purpose whatsoever. A city gains its initial effect from its streets and buildings. It becomes believable only through the people waiting outside a shop, sitting on a bench or carrying out some activity whose beginning and end remain unknown.
Many of the figures do not move at all. Even so, they do not appear lifeless. Their posture, their surroundings and their closeness to other figures are enough for the viewer to imagine a connection between them. One person carries a box. Two others stand facing one another. Someone bends over a vehicle. Stories emerge from these frozen moments even though nothing is explicitly being told.
The model provides no complete explanation. It trusts the visitor’s imagination to supply what is missing. Anyone who discovers a small scene decides for themselves what may have happened immediately before it and what might occur in the next moment.
Perhaps this is where the imagination of the model makers meets the imagination of the visitors. One creates the suggestion. The other continues it in the mind. The work therefore remains open, although every centimetre has been carefully designed.
This openness also explains why every detail does not need to be shown to every person. Much remains hidden. Some scenes lie in an awkward line of sight, while others are overshadowed by something larger. A visitor may pass them without noticing and discover them only years later. The work invested in them does not lose its value simply because it often remains unseen.
From an economic perspective, one might ask why so much time is devoted to something noticed by only a small proportion of visitors. Yet it is precisely this hidden work that changes the character of the entire place. A visitor can never know whether something else is waiting behind the next bend or between two buildings. Even an apparently empty space becomes a possible place of discovery.
The model contains more detail than any person could absorb during a single visit. This is not an excess that must somehow be mastered in full. It creates the certainty that the world is larger than one person’s view.
A Journey Through Many Faces of the Earth
The films create the impression of a journey that does not have to obey the actual distances of the world. A few steps are enough for the climate, architecture and landscape to change completely. The transitions are artificial, yet the experience they create possesses a credibility of its own.
At first, the eye may rest on snow covered peaks. Rocks rise above valleys, railway lines disappear into tunnels, and bridges span deep ravines. For a moment, the world appears cold, elevated and almost motionless.
Then the image changes. The green becomes denser, the vegetation more abundant. Water falls between plants and rocks. Where snow and stone previously shaped the landscape, there is now an impression of warmth and humidity. The rainforest follows no natural distance. It lies only a few steps away and yet feels like another world.
The surroundings change again. Bright beaches and turquoise water open the space. Small boats lie near the shore, palm trees stand in the light, and the landscape loses the closeness of the dense greenery. The eye can continue until the abundance suddenly gives way to barrenness.
In the Atacama, dry plains, salt lakes and volcanoes define the view. Colours, forms and light follow a different order. There is less for the eye to hold on to, and precisely because of that, a sense of vastness emerges. The landscape does not feel empty. It possesses a stillness that clearly distinguishes it from the lively cities and harbours of the other sections.
These changes do not present the Earth as a geographically accurate miniature whole. Even a building of this size would be too small for that. Landscapes have to be condensed, distances removed and characteristic elements selected. Reality is not copied in full. It is translated.
Such a translation requires decisions. What makes a region recognisable? Which colours, forms and movements carry its atmosphere? How much must be shown for the impression to emerge without reducing the landscape to a collection of familiar symbols?
The ambition therefore extends beyond accuracy. A mountain may be perfectly scaled and still have no effect. A city may contain all its most important buildings and yet fail to feel like the city it is meant to represent. Credibility emerges only when architecture, light, movement and the small scenes of everyday life all point in the same direction.
Walking through the themed worlds therefore changes more than the scenery. Each region alters the way one looks. In a broad landscape, the eye searches for distance. In a city, it follows streets, windows and traffic. At a harbour, it watches ships and the movement of water. In the mountains, it travels upwards. In the rainforest, it is more likely to lose itself in density.
Between these great changes lie transitions that are barely noticed consciously. One landscape begins to announce itself while the previous one has not yet fully disappeared. Colours shift, buildings become fewer or take on a different form. The visitor does not stand before separate display cases divided neatly from one another.
The worlds flow into each other while still remaining distinct.
This creates a strange simultaneity. The Earth is brought together within a confined space without merging into a single landscape. Only a few steps separate places that would require many hours of travel in reality.
The scale removes the distances. It preserves the differences.
The Eye Loses Its Destination
At the beginning of a visit, the temptation to see as much as possible must be considerable. The route is long, the famous attractions are numerous, and many people already know images of places they now want to experience from close by.
Yet the model is poorly suited to a list that can be completed point by point. Anyone attempting to take in everything will soon realise that the task is impossible. While one landscape is being examined, dozens of other events are passing unnoticed. Even within a single section, attention is never sufficient for all that is happening.
At first, this realisation may feel unsatisfying. Visitors have invested time and perhaps travelled a long way. Naturally, they do not want to miss anything.
After a while, however, something liberating can emerge from this. Once it becomes clear that completeness is impossible, the eye no longer needs to keep checking what comes next. It is allowed to remain where it is.
This does not mean that Miniatur Wunderland is a quiet place. A successful attraction filled with visitors can be noisy, crowded and exhausting. Reviews sometimes criticise the number of people, waiting times and the level of noise. The calmness described here does not necessarily exist in the room. It arises in the act of looking.
Even among many other people, a tiny scene can hold someone’s attention so completely that the surrounding activity recedes for a moment. The whole model disappears, as does the crowd. What remains is a small fragment watched for longer than originally intended.
This way of looking differs from the way we encounter many images in everyday life. Outside the model, impressions often change before they have time to settle. One image follows another, one message replaces the previous one, and attention becomes something that must constantly be won again.
Miniatur Wunderland also contains movement, light and technical effects. Yet every second does not need to be louder or more spectacular than the one before it. A departing aeroplane may draw the attention of a large group. A short time later, a single visitor may remain in front of a motionless scene from everyday life.
Both belong to the same experience. The great technical events capture the eye. The small scenes hold it. Somewhere between them, visitors begin to find their own pace.
When the Same World Becomes Another
Several times during the day, the light changes throughout the entire model. The transition begins slowly. Colours lose their brightness, shadows deepen, and dusk settles over landscapes that only moments earlier stood in full daylight.
One by one, windows begin to glow. Streetlights alter the appearance of a city, vehicles carry trails of light through the darkness, and buildings that attracted little attention during the day suddenly emerge. Other details almost disappear.
The model remains the same. Yet it tells a different story.
During the day, the eye can take in the shape of a landscape, follow roads and paths, and recognise architectural details. At night, smaller islands of attention appear. A lit window draws the eye into a house. A vehicle emerges briefly from the darkness and vanishes again. Harbours, airports and cities acquire an atmosphere that does not come from the visible models alone.
This change is more than a technical effect. It reveals how strongly perception depends on conditions we usually regard as secondary. A different form of lighting is enough to make the same place appear familiar, mysterious, alive or abandoned.
The small stories change as well. A figure that was barely noticeable during the day now stands in the light of a window. A square that previously seemed open and wide becomes a confined space between streetlights and shadows. The visitor does not necessarily discover anything new. What already existed is simply seen under different conditions.
Before the night has lost its appeal, morning begins. Outlines become clearer again, colours return, and the illuminated windows gradually lose their importance. Life appears to begin once more, although no real day has passed.
This rhythm prevents the model from becoming fixed in a single state. A visitor can return to the same place and experience something different without a single figure having been moved.
This may explain part of the time people spend there. The world does not remain unchanged while it waits to be observed. It changes the conditions under which it is seen. Anyone who moves on misses a scene at night. Anyone who stays does not see what is happening a few metres away.
Every decision opens one view and closes another.
The Wonder of the Visitors and the Wonder of the Makers
Wonder is often associated with children, as though it were an early way of seeing that adults eventually leave behind. Yet wonder is not a lack of knowledge. It can arise precisely when someone understands enough to recognise how unlikely or difficult something truly is.
A child watches an aeroplane take off and delights in the movement. A technician observes the same event and thinks about the control systems, the mechanics and all the possible sources of failure that had to be mastered before it could happen. Both are filled with wonder, but for different reasons.
Perhaps this is one of Miniatur Wunderland’s particular strengths. It does not require a choice between childlike joy and adult understanding. The more one knows about how it was created, the less the immediate effect has to suffer. At its best, each form of wonder strengthens the other.
Anyone who followed the development of Formula 1 sees more in a racing car than a moving model. Anyone who knows how long a technical solution took to develop experiences its apparent ease differently.
At the same time, no one needs to know that history in order to be carried away by the scene.
The work functions on several levels. It speaks to people who want to understand technical systems, but also to those interested in landscapes, architecture or stories. Others visit because their children are fascinated by it and discover something there they did not expect to find for themselves.
Perhaps many people also form such a strong connection with the place because they do not see only the wonder of the visitors. In the films, project reports and stories, they encounter people who have remained curious themselves. Employees spend years developing a technology because they want to discover whether a particular movement can be made possible. Model makers devote themselves to tiny details even though many visitors will never notice them.
Miniatur Wunderland therefore seems to have grown from the same attitude it later awakens in those who visit it. People had to imagine something that did not yet exist. They had to look closely, ask questions and allow an idea to occupy them for long enough to become reality.
In this sense, wonder is not merely a brief effect at the end of the work.
It also stands at its beginning.
What a Person Takes Home
After a long visit, it is probably not the entire model that remains in the memory. It is too large, and the impressions are too numerous. What remains are fragments.
A child remembers a figure their parents may not even have noticed. Someone thinks about a harbour, an illuminated square or the sound of an aeroplane taking off. Another person carries home less a single image than the feeling of having looked at the world differently for a few hours.
No one can determine which moment it will be. The greatest technical achievement does not necessarily create the strongest memory. A scene at the edge may remain longer than an entire themed section.
This places a peculiar limit on the makers. They can invest years in a landscape, but they cannot determine its effect. They can make attention possible, but they cannot force it. The work becomes complete only when people encounter it, and at that moment it partly escapes those who created it.
Perhaps this is true of every form of art and craftsmanship. A work belongs to the person who creates it while it is being made. Afterwards, it begins to form relationships with people who played no part in its creation. They read something of their own into it and carry it to a place the maker does not know.
Miniatur Wunderland builds small worlds. Inside its visitors, these become other, invisible worlds. Memories connect with the models, conversations begin, and sometimes a child shows their father something he would have overlooked on his own.
One could try to describe the effect through visitor numbers, length of stay and public recognition. These figures matter to the company. Yet they cannot capture the brief glance exchanged between two people who have been reminded of something by a small scene.
Such moments cannot be counted. Even so, they belong to what is created there every day.
Anyone moving through the themed worlds travels not only through countries and landscapes. They also pass through different years in the history of Miniatur Wunderland. Some sections date from the beginning, while others show what became technically and artistically possible decades later. Between them lies a story that cannot be read from a timeline on the wall.
It has been built.
A World That Never Finishes Becoming
Many structures reach a moment when their story is essentially complete. The scaffolding disappears, the final rooms are handed over, and from that point onwards the task is mainly to preserve what has been created. Repairs are made, parts are renewed, and a condition that is no longer fundamentally questioned is protected.
Miniatur Wunderland has never reached that point.
Its earliest sections have long since become part of its own history, yet the model still cannot be regarded as a finished work. While visitors move through landscapes that have existed for many years, new worlds are taking shape only a few rooms away. Elsewhere, technical solutions are being revised even though they have already worked. What has been built is never only the result. It becomes the foundation for what comes next.
One could imagine the development as a time lapse. The observer remains in the same place while almost twenty five years pass before them.
At first, the rooms are empty. Plans lie on tables, wood is being cut, routes are discussed and changed again. People bend over drawings even though no one can yet know whether reality will later resemble the idea. At this stage, every design remains provisional. It may endure or disappear only a few days later.
There are still no visitors pointing towards tiny scenes. There is no daily operation that has to be protected and no older landscape to which a new one must be connected. The space is open, but for that very reason there is no proof that the idea will succeed.
In August 2001, the doors open. Central Germany, Knuffingen and Austria form the first world of Miniatur Wunderland. Trains move through valleys, disappear into tunnels and emerge somewhere else. Villages lie between mountains, roads connect small places, and beside the tracks the life that will later become one of the defining elements of the model has already begun.
Compared with its present size, this first world is still manageable. For the people who created it, however, it must have seemed enormous. Everything that had previously existed only as a plan, a calculation or a hope was now exposed to the eyes of real visitors. Only then could it become clear whether people were willing to enter into this unusual idea.
The opening was not the end of the construction period. As soon as the first section had found its place, the next development began. The model did not grow from a fully worked out master plan whose individual parts merely had to be completed one after another.
Every new world altered the idea of what might be possible.
The City Becomes a Miniature of Itself
Hamburg brought a part of Miniatur Wunderland’s immediate surroundings into the model. The warehouse district, the harbour and later the Elbphilharmonie became part of the small world that had itself been created inside a warehouse building.
This produced a peculiar closeness between reality and the model. Visitors could stand only a few steps from a building and look at its reduced form. Streets, bridges and waterways that shaped the life of the city outside appeared inside in a new order.
A city cannot be reduced in size simply by reproducing every building in the correct proportion. Even an enormous model does not provide enough space for that. The model makers had to select, condense and sometimes alter distances. Recognition did not emerge from complete accuracy, but from intelligent decisions about what gives a place its character.
This demands a different way of looking from simple copying. A building may be correct in scale and still fail to resemble the building people know. Perhaps a characteristic perspective is missing, or its relationship with its surroundings, or the colour that has impressed itself more strongly on memory than the actual façade.
Hamburg therefore did not become a reduced map. The city was given a form that brought together its defining images. The harbour, the warehouse district and later the Elbphilharmonie represented more than architecture. They brought water, ships, history and Miniatur Wunderland’s own origins into the model.
For a moment, reality became miniature. A little later, the miniature itself could appear more real because the eye discovered relationships there that remain hidden outside among streets, buildings and distances.
America Expanded the Imagination
When America was created, more than the geographical direction changed. The landscapes became wider, the roads longer and the cities larger. The closeness of the first sections opened out, and with it grew the idea of what could be represented within the available space.
America could not appear as a single, uniform place. The continent consists of contrasts that cannot be contained within one landscape. Cities, deserts, roads and different forms of life had to be condensed without becoming a mere collection of familiar images.
Each new section therefore raised a different question. Hamburg was about translating a familiar reality. America demanded a sense of distance even though the available space remained limited. The model had to suggest a vastness that was not physically there.
This could not be achieved through larger areas alone. A sense of space emerges from lines of sight, the course of roads, the distribution of buildings and the relationship between busy and apparently empty areas. A large room can still feel confined. A small surface can create the impression that something continues beyond its visible edge.
With America, Miniatur Wunderland began to work more strongly with such effects. Landscape was no longer simply built. It had to create a space that reached beyond its actual boundaries.
When the Water Began to Move
Scandinavia introduced a new challenge. Water had already been part of several landscapes, but now it was meant to become a moving space in its own right. Ships were to travel through harbours and fjords, hold their course and find their way without constantly reminding the visitor of the technology behind them.
A ship moves differently from a train or a road vehicle. It follows no visible track and has no clearly defined route across the water. Small deviations alter its course. Wind, currents and the inertia of movement, which seem natural in a real ship, have to be made believable in a model by other means.
A considerable amount of technical effort therefore lies behind a ship moving calmly across the water. The visitor should notice as little of it as possible. At first glance, one may wonder how the model is controlled. When the illusion works, that question soon recedes. One simply watches the ship continue on its way.
For me, this shift is always a sign of successful technology. It first attracts attention and then disappears behind the process it makes possible. Its greatest achievement is not that visitors recognise its complexity. It is that, for a moment, they forget it.
Scandinavia also expanded the team’s technical experience. Water surfaces had to be maintained, ships serviced and control systems developed so that they remained reliable in daily operation. Every new form of movement created knowledge that could later become important somewhere else.
Mountains Change the Space
With Switzerland, the model grew in another direction. Mountains require height. They must rise above their surroundings, form valleys and still leave enough room for railway lines, bridges, buildings and hidden technology.
Inside a building, height is just as limited as floor space. The landscape had to appear powerful without overwhelming the room. Visitors were meant to see mountains, not the structure supporting them.
Peaks, rocks and valleys therefore changed the perception of the entire model. The eye travelled upwards more often, trains appeared smaller, and distances were created through differences in height. A mountain landscape in miniature produced a spatial impression of its own.
Once again, the effect did not depend on realistic forms alone. A mountain may be geologically accurate and still fail to convey a sense of scale. Only its relationship with valleys, buildings, vegetation and tiny vehicles allows it to appear immense.
Switzerland demonstrated that the available space did not simply have to be filled. It could be expanded through design. Walls, ceilings and lines of sight became parts of a landscape that allowed visitors to forget its true scale for a moment.
An Airport as a World of Interconnected Systems
Knuffingen Airport brought together many of the experiences gained during the earlier years and at the same time forced them into a new order. An airport does not consist of one spectacular event. Taking off and landing are only the most visible parts of a system made up of taxiways, lighting, vehicles, buildings, baggage transport and countless coordinated processes.
For an aeroplane to take off convincingly, many things must already have happened correctly long before it reaches the runway. It leaves its parking position, follows the taxiways, may have to wait, accelerates and finally rises into the air. At the same time, other aircraft and vehicles continue to move. Lighting, control systems and timing all have to work together.
The real achievement therefore lies less in a single mechanism than in the connection between many systems. One component may function perfectly on its own and still disrupt the entire process if it does not respond at the right moment.
When visitors watch the first take off, they may search for the trick. They study the movement, try to recognise the mechanism and wonder how the aeroplane suddenly leaves the ground. By the second or third time, the way of looking changes.
They simply follow the flight. The sense of wonder has not disappeared. Its focus has shifted. At first, it belongs to the technology. Later, it belongs to the ease with which that technology has become a believable event.
The airport shows particularly clearly that technology at Miniatur Wunderland is rarely meant to stand on its own. It is not an exhibit placed beside a landscape. It has to become part of a world and serve a purpose within it.
The better it succeeds, the less it draws attention to itself.
Italy Changes More Than the Landscape
With Italy, Miniatur Wunderland acquired a different atmosphere. Light, squares, façades and Mediterranean life required a form of design that could not simply be carried over from earlier sections.
A region does not become believable merely because several famous buildings stand in the right places. What matters is how its colours relate to one another, how narrow or open the streets feel and which small events give everyday life its character. Architecture, light and human scenes must all carry the same atmosphere.
Venice took this challenge further. Canals, bridges and façades form a city in which the relationship with water changes everything. Routes take different forms, buildings are reflected, and the closeness between architecture and water creates a space that is clearly unlike Hamburg or Scandinavia.
Once again, this was more than another section. The model gained a new kind of mood. It could now convey Mediterranean brightness, narrow lanes and stretches of water that did not resemble a harbour, but the streets of a city.
Every new world also changed the way the earlier ones were seen. Anyone returning from Italy to an older section looks at it differently. The contrasts reveal qualities that might have remained unnoticed within a single landscape.
A Bridge Across the Canal
Eventually, the existing rooms were no longer enough. Miniatur Wunderland could continue to develop only by extending beyond the limits of the original warehouse building. A bridge was finally built across the canal to connect two of the historic warehouses. For visitors, it is part of the route. In the history of the project, it marks a step that went far beyond a simple structural expansion.
The first model had been created within a particular spatial idea. The bridge transformed that idea into a larger structure. Planning, technology and the movement of visitors had to be connected across two buildings. The new section could not feel like a detached addition. It had to belong to Miniatur Wunderland while also making the beginning of a new stage perceptible.
While crossing the bridge, visitors leave the world they have known without it truly ending. On the other side, South America opens before them.
The path therefore connects more than two spaces. It leads from a long history into a section created under different conditions and with new partners.
The Decision Not to Believe You Can Do Everything Best Yourself
With South America came a form of collaboration that, for me, reaches far beyond the construction of additional landscapes. Miniatur Wunderland worked together with United Scale Arts and the Martínez family of model makers in Argentina.
The reason was not simply the need for additional labour. The Argentinian partners knew the landscapes, colours, culture and everyday reality of South America from their own experience. They could recognise things that might have remained hidden from a European team, however thorough its research.
This decision reveals a remarkable form of confidence. A successful company could easily come to believe that it is best equipped to solve every new challenge on its own. After all, the Hamburg team had demonstrated over many years that it could create technically and artistically extraordinary worlds.
Instead, the particular experience of others was not regarded as competition. It expanded what the team itself was capable of achieving.
This does not mean simply handing responsibility to someone else. International collaboration becomes more demanding when different working methods, languages and physical distances have to be brought together. Ideas must be explained, misunderstandings resolved and technical requirements coordinated.
Yet precisely because of this, something can emerge that would have remained impossible within a single point of view. The Argentinian partners did not have to adapt their experience completely to an existing vision from Hamburg. Their perception was meant to change the way South America itself would be represented.
Good collaboration does not reveal itself when everyone involved eventually thinks alike. It reveals itself when their differences make the work more believable. This thought leads back to the beginning of Miniatur Wunderland. Frederik, Gerrit and Stephan did not have to abandon their different perspectives either. The project emerged precisely because their differences moved in the same direction.
Decades later, the same principle is repeated across continents.
Rio and the Landscapes of the South
Rio de Janeiro brought colour, movement and a density of life that differed sharply from the wide landscapes of Patagonia. City, coast and mountains lie close together. Streets rise steeply, buildings crowd into limited space, and everything must create the impression that far more of the city continues beyond the visible section.
Here too, it was not enough simply to place familiar landmarks beside one another. The statue of Christ, beaches and colourful houses would not yet create a believable Rio. Only the connection between topography, architecture, traffic and everyday scenes can produce a city that is more than a collection of its famous images.
Patagonia opens the view in the opposite direction. The landscape becomes rougher and quieter. Wide spaces, rocks, water and changing weather determine its character. What emerges in Rio through closeness and movement requires distance and another form of stillness here.
Both regions belong to the same continent, yet they demand entirely different design decisions. This is precisely where the value of working with people who know these differences from their own experience becomes visible.
The landscapes do not become documentary copies as a result. They too have to be condensed and adapted to the space available. But the choice of what appears essential changes when people with personal experience take part in making that decision.
An Ocean Lies Between Two Continents
The connection between Patagonia and Antarctica introduced another challenge. The Drake Passage is one of the roughest stretches of sea on Earth. The Atlantic and Pacific meet there, storms sweep across the water, and even large ships are thrown about by the waves.
Such a passage cannot be represented convincingly by allowing a small ship to travel across a calm surface. Movement, weather and the uncertainty of the crossing belong to the character of the place.
Miniatur Wunderland therefore created a combination of mechanics, moving ships, lighting, projections and visual weather effects. Water alone could not produce the necessary impression. Only the interaction of several layers made the sea appear restless and dangerous.
The room itself becomes part of the illusion. Projections extend the visible surface, weather alters perception, and mechanical movement gives the ship a sense of instability that does not come merely from its course. The boundary between built landscape and image begins to disappear.
An initial version worked and was accepted by the audience. That could have been enough. The scene fulfilled its purpose, visitors understood the passage, and the technical combination of different systems had proved successful.
Even so, the Argentinian team later developed an improved mechanism.
This decision recalls the rebuilding of the fairground, although it has a different character. The first Drake Passage did not have to be replaced because it had failed. It was developed further because its success revealed the possibility of something better.
Sometimes only a functioning solution shows what is still missing. Beforehand, the main concern is whether something can be achieved at all. Once that question has been answered, more subtle differences become visible. Movements might feel more believable, transitions smoother or effects more precisely coordinated.
Working and being finished are not the same thing. That sentence could easily become a general principle that prevents any work from ever reaching an end. At some point, something must be allowed to be shown. People cannot continue building forever in pursuit of an unreachable perfection. Miniatur Wunderland also opens new sections even though improvements may follow later.
The difference lies in whether success brings every further question to an end. With the Drake Passage, it apparently did not. The first solution retained its value without being declared the final limit.
A Wall Should Stop Being a Wall
The experience gained from projections and moving images continues into the later South American sections. The rainforest, the Andes and the Atacama present new challenges for a space whose actual boundaries might otherwise remain visible.
In the rainforest especially, a clearly recognisable wall would disturb the illusion. Dense vegetation depends on the impression that it continues beyond what can be seen. A corner or a straight boundary immediately reminds visitors that they are standing in front of an artificial model.
Projections can alter such limits. They do not simply extend the landscape with an additional image. Light, colour, movement and the built surfaces must respond to one another so that the transition remains as unobtrusive as possible.
An uneven surface or the corner of a room is not concealed. It becomes part of the image. The physical space still exists, but for a moment it loses its definite form. Vegetation, weather or light carry the eye onwards even though the constructed landscape has already ended.
This is a different kind of technical development from Formula 1. There, the challenge lies in precise control, movement and the calculation of many possible sequences. In the rainforest, technology must alter perception. It is not meant to move a single attraction, but to make the room itself appear larger.
Both tasks nevertheless require the same restraint. As soon as visitors mainly admire the projection, the illusion has succeeded only in part. They should not think that a wall has been covered with technically impressive images.
For a moment, they should believe that more forest continues beyond the plants. Here too, the technology disappears behind the experience. Its complexity remains, but it recedes from awareness.
Monaco and the Long Road Behind a Single Moment
Monaco opened in April 2024. The city, the coastline and the Formula 1 circuit came together in a space that allowed very little room for inaccuracy.
The years spent developing the racing technology have already been described. Within the chronological journey through Miniatur Wunderland, however, they take on another meaning. Monaco reveals how far the possibilities had advanced since the earliest sections were created.
In the beginning, it was already a major technical achievement to keep large numbers of trains moving reliably through the landscapes. Two decades later, tiny racing cars travel freely along different lines, accelerate, brake and overtake one another.
This difference tells more than a story of improved technology. It tells of knowledge accumulated over many years. Earlier control systems, unsuccessful attempts and experience from other projects form an invisible foundation on which the circuit could be built.
A race lasts only a few moments. The development behind it occupied a significant part of Miniatur Wunderland’s history. Time behaves strangely here. Years disappear inside a movement that later looks completely natural.
Perhaps this is one of the greatest illusions created by finished works. They conceal the time required to make them. Visitors see only the present state and can hardly judge how many years, people and discarded solutions are contained within it.
Every World Carries the Earlier Ones Within It
In a time lapse, the sections appear one after another. In the real work, however, they were never completely separate from one another. Experience continued to move forward.
A technical solution from an earlier project was altered and used elsewhere. Knowledge about water, control systems and projections flowed into new worlds. Employees learned which materials could withstand daily operation and which constructions worked only under ideal conditions.
Mistakes travelled onwards as well. They did not remain as visible flaws, but as experience. Anyone who has seen a particular solution become unreliable after several months will approach the next section differently. A failed attempt may disappear from the model and still remain present in every later decision.
No new world therefore begins entirely from nothing. It grows from everything that has already been learned. Even a completely different landscape carries experience from sections with which it appears to have little in common.
The technology developed for Formula 1 helps with the creation of a roller coaster. Projections from the Drake Passage are developed further for the rainforest. Experience from Scandinavia changes the way water is handled. The airport demonstrates how many systems must work together reliably.
Knowledge does not follow the borders between the themed worlds. It moves through the entire company. People leave similar traces. Some have worked at Miniatur Wunderland for many years. Others were involved only in a particular section or later chose another path. Their decisions do not disappear completely when they leave.
A construction method, a visual idea or a technical solution can continue to influence the work for a long time. Later employees take it up, change it and add something of their own. The work therefore has no single signature.
It contains many layers of human effort.
The Differences Are Allowed to Remain Visible
A model that has grown over almost twenty five years cannot display the same technical and artistic standard in every square metre. The earlier sections were created under different conditions from Monaco, Rio or the newer South American landscapes.
One could try to bring every older world fully up to the latest possibilities. The result would be more consistent. At the same time, part of the history would disappear.
The older sections show what was possible at the time they were built. They carry traces of the first experiences and sometimes decisions that would be made differently today. This is not merely a weakness. These differences make development visible.
Technology and materials must, of course, be maintained. A section should not be allowed to deteriorate simply because it is historic. Yet between preservation and complete renewal lies a decision that has to be made again for every area.
The fairground was allowed to disappear because a stronger vision took its place. Other sections may retain their earlier form precisely because they tell the story of the beginning. There is no rule requiring everything that has proved successful to be preserved or everything that has become outdated to be replaced.
A completely smoothed out model would be technically impressive, but timeless in the wrong way. It would no longer reveal how it had grown. Its past would exist only in archives and films.
In the Miniatur Wunderland of today, different years stand beside one another. A few steps lead from early landscapes to sections in which decades of experience have become visible. Visitors therefore move not only through countries and continents.
They travel through the development of a work.
The Process of Becoming Remains Part of the Exhibition
In many exhibitions, the public sees only the finished result. Workshops, unfinished models and technical experiments remain behind closed doors. The place where something is made and the place where it is viewed are kept separate.
At Miniatur Wunderland, the process of becoming remains more visible. Visitors can pass areas where construction is still under way. New landscapes take shape close to an existing operation that must continue to function every day. Tools, models and temporary structures are reminders that this world did not suddenly appear in its completed form.
The unfinished has an appeal of its own. A bare surface requires more imagination than a completed landscape. Wood, cables and the first rough shapes reveal very little of the effect that will later emerge there. Anyone who follows the construction over a longer period experiences the distance between the beginning and the result.
The published construction diaries and films extend this insight. For many people, a new world begins long before it opens. They see sketches, technical problems and individual stages of progress. By the time the section finally appears complete, they have already formed a relationship with its creation.
This changes the meaning of an exhibition. What has been created is not the only thing being shown. The act of creating it becomes part of what interests people.
Perhaps this explains why so many viewers follow the development of new sections even when there is initially little more to see than workshop images. The result remains unknown, yet the path towards it already possesses a tension of its own. Every decision may change something, and no one knows exactly which difficulty will appear next.
A perfectly controlled public image would remove this uncertainty. It would show only what had already succeeded.
Miniatur Wunderland, at least in many places, allows people to see that those doing the work are still searching for answers themselves.
Time Is Not Merely Measured Here
Anyone walking through Miniatur Wunderland today encounters landscapes, buildings, ships, aeroplanes and trains. At the same time, they encounter different ideas of what was possible at a particular moment.
The earliest sections contain the excitement of the beginning. Later worlds reveal growing knowledge, greater technical confidence and an increasing willingness to connect different systems with one another. South America expands not only the physical space, but also the form of collaboration.
Every section contains years that visitors cannot see. They are present in the decisions, materials and movements. A train crosses a bridge in a few seconds, although its planning and construction required a long period of time. A ship travels through the Drake Passage while the experience of several teams comes together in its movement.
Time therefore appears in different forms at Miniatur Wunderland. Day and night alternate within minutes. Trains cross condensed distances. Historical scenes can stand beside contemporary cities. At the same time, the real model continues to grow over decades.
These different levels of time overlap. A miniature world accelerates the day, compresses distances and preserves individual moments indefinitely. The company behind it, however, works slowly. Some solutions require years, and some ideas wait a long time before their moment arrives.
A faster Miniatur Wunderland might have been possible. The model could have become larger sooner, new sections could have opened more quickly, and technical ambitions could have been reduced.
But then less time would not simply have passed.
A different work would have emerged.
Its duration belongs to its form.
There Is No Final Section
While visitors look at landscapes that have already opened, the next world is growing elsewhere. The rainforest, the Andes and the Atacama are not final additions after which the task would consist only of preserving what has been built.
Even if every area currently planned were completed one day, the story would probably not simply end. Experience changes expectations. New technical possibilities raise questions that cannot yet be asked today. Older ideas return because something that once failed has suddenly become possible.
This does not mean that growth can continue without limits. Space, money and human energy all have boundaries. A work can also develop through improvement, greater depth and new forms of storytelling without constantly becoming larger.
Miniatur Wunderland has never drawn its vitality from additional square metres alone. It has grown from a willingness to look at what already exists with fresh eyes. Sometimes this has led to complete reconstruction, sometimes to a technical improvement or a collaboration that changed the team’s own perspective.
A world does not remain alive simply because it is never completed. The unfinished can also become nothing more than a habit.
It remains alive when people continue to ask questions of it.
What could become more believable? Which story is missing? Which solution from another field might open a new possibility here? Who possesses experience that we ourselves do not have?
As long as such questions remain, Miniatur Wunderland is not complete. It carries its past visibly within it while using that past as material for something that does not yet have a form.
In a time lapse, a model grows. In reality, knowledge grows.
A City That Does Not Yet Exist
Up to this point, the journey has led through what already exists at Miniatur Wunderland. Through landscapes that once lived only on paper, through technical developments whose outcome remained uncertain for years, and through rooms that changed with every extension.
The past of this place has been built. Its future has not yet taken a fixed form. That is precisely why it may be imagined.
The aim is not to anticipate a planned section or to attribute a vision to those responsible that may never have been theirs. The city that follows exists only in this article. It grows from the question of how far the way of working already visible at Miniatur Wunderland might one day develop.
Technology is not used for its own sake. It is meant to make a world more believable, extend the actual space and eventually become so natural that no one thinks about it any longer.
The year is 2035.
For the people entering Miniatur Wunderland that morning, this year is not the future. It is simply their present. They carry different phones in their pockets, move through a city that has changed since our own time, and regard as ordinary many things that still appear possible rather than real to us today.
Technology has continued to develop inside Miniatur Wunderland as well. Sensors have become smaller, control systems more precise, projections more spatial and movements less restricted.
Yet none of this is explained to visitors before they are allowed to experience it. There is no sign promising that they are about to witness a particularly advanced technical achievement.
They simply enter the next world. New York is not yet visible.
The city announces itself before the first skyscraper comes fully into view. High above the visitors, an aeroplane descends calmly towards John F. Kennedy International Airport. Only moments later, another aircraft takes off from LaGuardia Airport, slowly gains altitude and disappears behind the still hidden skyline.
A news helicopter circles in the distance. Later, a police helicopter follows and turns above the East River.
These movements do not appear as separate demonstrations. No one waits for a particular sequence to begin. The aircraft arrive and depart as though the city had already begun its day long before the first visitor entered.
Anyone who looks up only briefly may miss a landing. Anyone who waits a little longer may see two. There is no single highlight towards which everyone is directed at the same moment.
New York does not live according to the rhythm of a performance.
Where the City Rises from the Water
The first complete view does not belong to the skyscrapers. Before Manhattan reveals its scale, the harbour opens out. Ferries leave their terminals and connect the islands with one another. A tugboat guides a container ship through the channel. Farther away, a cruise ship slowly pulls away from its berth while smaller boats cross between the shores. Some follow a recognisable course. Others disappear for a while behind a larger vessel and reappear somewhere else.
Seagulls move above the water. They do not follow a visible loop that becomes predictable after only a few minutes. Some drift towards the shore, while others remain above the waves. The first morning light breaks across the surface of the water between them.
The Statue of Liberty does not stand at the edge of the model like an isolated landmark placed on display. It belongs to the harbour, to the ships and to the route by which people approach the city.
Its effect comes from the distance. At first, it is only a small shape between water and sky. Only as the view continues to open does it become distinct.
The water does not visibly end where the constructed surface should have reached its limit. Experience gained from the Drake Passage, the rainforest and other projected worlds has been developed further. Real water, moving light, projections and the architecture of the room merge so closely that no clear boundary can be recognised.
A wave continues into an image without the transition becoming noticeable. A ship disappears towards the horizon even though the actual room should not provide enough distance. Light alters the perception of space, and part of the harbour seems to continue where, in reality, a wall has long since begun.
The visitor does not observe a technical enlargement of the room. They do not think about projection surfaces, control software or the precise connection between real water and digital imagery.
For a moment, they believe they are standing before a harbour that extends far beyond the limits of the building.
This would be a possible continuation of something Miniatur Wunderland has attempted since its earliest days. The existing space is not denied.
Perception changes it.
A Ferry Carries More Than Its Passengers
A ferry leaves the terminal and sets a course for Ellis Island. At first, it moves through the New York of 2035. Modern ships cross its path, aircraft pass above the harbour, and the glass façades of Manhattan reflect the morning light.
As the ferry continues, something begins to change.
It happens slowly enough that no single moment reveals the transition. The colours lose their modern clarity. Buildings recede, the light becomes duller, and thick smoke appears above the water.
The ferry has disappeared. In its place, a steamship approaches. People stand close together along the rail. Some hold small suitcases. Others carry almost everything that remains of their former lives in only a few pieces of luggage. Children stand among adults who can barely conceal their tension. Some look towards the Statue of Liberty. Others search the horizon for the city they have heard about for so long.
There are no grand gestures. No one explains the meaning of the moment. Their posture is enough. Hope and fear lie so close together that they can hardly be separated.
For millions of people, arriving in New York was not the beginning of a journey as a visitor. It was the boundary between two lives. Behind them lay places, families and languages they had left behind. Before them lay a country that promised neither success nor security.
At first, it offered only the possibility of beginning again. A miniature world cannot fully represent the weight of this history. Every scene has to shorten, select and depend on only a few visible signs. Precisely because of that, it should not try to explain the moment through too many effects.
No dramatic commentary accompanies the ship. No music tells visitors what they are supposed to feel. The city remembers without turning memory into a historical performance.
After a short time, the present returns. The smoke begins to dissolve, the steamship loses its outline, and the modern ferry continues its journey. The skyline of 2035 stands on the horizon once more.
For visitors who arrive at the same place later, the scene remains invisible. They see only a ferry travelling towards Ellis Island.
The memory is not a scheduled event repeated at fixed times. It appears rarely enough to feel like a thought belonging to the city itself. Anyone who experiences it does not know whether they will ever see it again.
Manhattan Does Not Wake All at Once
Beyond the harbour, Manhattan rises from the water. The skyline does not appear as a row of famous buildings waiting to be recognised. It forms a single relationship between height, light, distance and movement.
Some façades already stand in sunlight while others remain in shadow. Windows begin to glow one after another. In the lower floors, the day has arrived earlier than in some of the apartments high above the streets. The city does not wake in response to a single signal. Each part finds its own beginning.
Traffic becomes denser along Fifth Avenue. Taxis force their way through gaps that barely seem wide enough. Delivery vans stop outside shops even though they block half the lane for several minutes. Bicycle couriers move between the vehicles and change direction whenever a car brakes unexpectedly.
People emerge from the subway and spread across the pavements. Some carry cups of coffee, while others are already reading from their devices. A woman stops briefly to search for something in her bag. A man behind her steps aside without slowing down. Moments later, both have disappeared into the crowd.
Steam rises from a manhole. For a moment, it drifts in front of the passing taxis before dissolving between the façades. What belongs to the familiar image of New York today has not completely disappeared in 2035. A city changes without abandoning every trace of its past.
Far beneath the street, a train enters a station. Through an opening, the underground level becomes visible for a short time. Doors open, people step out, and others push into the carriages. A display changes, a signal switches, and the train begins to move again.
Then the view closes. The street above seems to know nothing about what is happening only a few metres below it.
Underground New York is not a second exhibition level that can be viewed in its entirety. It appears at individual points and disappears again. Visitors receive brief glimpses into a system that holds the city together without constantly revealing itself at the surface.
Here too, the technology does not take the leading role. One could explain how many trains are being controlled at the same time, how their movements are connected with the traffic above them or which sensors make reliable operation possible. All of that would be remarkable.
Yet in the moment of experience, it should become nothing more than a city whose life moves through several layers at once.
A City That Does Not Need Its Visitors
After some time, the impression emerges that this world did not begin to live only for the person standing in front of it. It continues its routines whether anyone is watching or not.
While a train enters a station, a baker several streets away unlocks the door of his shop. He carries trays into the display and places a small sign outside the entrance. Later, a customer will stand there, but at this moment the street is almost empty.
On a rooftop, a beekeeper checks her hives. Insects move among lavender, herbs and small fruit trees, barely more than dots from a distance. Nearby are beds of vegetables and berries. What was once regarded as an isolated form of urban farming has become a natural part of the city.
On another roof, an older man waters his plants. He works slowly and pauses from time to time to look down at the streets below. Two buildings away, a family eats breakfast among flowerpots and small trees. No one speaks very much. A child looks over the edge and watches the vehicles far beneath them.
Inside a high rise building, a jazz quartet is rehearsing. The musicians can only be seen when the light falls into the room at a particular angle. One floor above them, an architect is working on a model. She removes one piece, studies the space it leaves behind and places it somewhere else.
In an apartment, the breakfast table is being cleared. A man carries two plates into the kitchen while another person opens a window. Several floors below, a restaurant is already preparing for the evening. Chairs are moved, glasses polished and deliveries checked.
Then the light changes across the glass façade. The rooms disappear behind reflections, and the building shows only sky and the houses opposite. The city has allowed some of its inhabitants to become visible for a short time and now withdraws them again.
Anyone looking in another direction has noticed none of it. That does not make the scene pointless. A believable world needs events that are not all observed. If every movement takes place only when a visitor can see it, the world remains a performance.
Life emerges from the possibility of missing something.
Broad Avenues and Narrow Streets
The route continues. The great avenues fall behind, although their noise does not disappear immediately. The buildings draw closer together, shop windows become smaller, and the first tables stand outside cafés on the pavement.
In front of a bakery, an employee carries bread into the display. For a moment, the door opens and the smell of coffee and warm pastries drifts into the street. A few metres farther on, it is carried away by a breeze coming from the Hudson between the buildings.
A man buys a printed newspaper from a kiosk. By 2035, this is no longer an ordinary habit, but the seller knows him. They exchange a few words before the man tucks the newspaper beneath his arm and continues on his way.
A woman walks her dog along the pavement. The animal stops beside a fire hydrant while she looks at her phone. Behind her, a delivery driver pushes several boxes of vegetables through the open door of a small restaurant.
At a construction site, a concrete mixer slowly reverses. Two workers interrupt what they are doing and signal to the driver. A third stands a little apart, drinking from a paper cup. Once the vehicle has reached its position, they all return to work.
There is nothing unusual about any of it. That is precisely why the street feels inhabited. A city does not consist only of events that demand to be told. Most of its life is made up of actions no one considers worth remembering. Goods are delivered, doors are opened, dogs are walked and buildings are repaired.
Without these ordinary activities, the famous streets would remain nothing more than scenery.
At the Edge of Central Park
Between the trees, the pale façade of the Plaza Hotel comes into view. It is not permanently visible in full. Branches conceal parts of it, and the view changes with every step.
A taxi stops outside the entrance. The doorman is already moving towards the vehicle before the older passenger has stepped out. He greets him with a familiarity that suggests this is not their first meeting. The man says something, the doorman laughs, takes a small bag and accompanies him towards the revolving door.
A few seconds later, the taxi moves away. Another vehicle stops, a family gets out, and the brief personal moment disappears into the rhythm of the hotel.
Inside Central Park, the paths follow another pace. Joggers pass by, a dog chases a ball, and someone feeds birds from a bench. Children guide small boats across a pond. Some visitors to New York stop at the edge and try to catch a glimpse of the skyscrapers between the trees.
The park is not a green interruption within the city. It belongs to it. The façades remain visible beyond the branches, the noise of traffic reaches inside, and at its edges the density of the streets begins again immediately.
On the broad steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, people sit with cups of coffee, rucksacks and shopping bags. A school group gathers near the entrance. A teacher counts the children, reaches the wrong number and begins again.
A street artist looks at his almost finished picture. He leans back, takes a step to one side and seems to decide that it is complete.
Then he adds one more brushstroke. Perhaps it improves the picture. Perhaps it was already finished. The visitor will never know.
Behind the Shop Windows
A few buildings farther on, the eye is caught by a large shop window. Behind it, a dressmaker places the final pins into an evening gown. She steps back, studies the fall of the fabric and adjusts a section that is barely visible from the street.
Next door, an antiquarian bookseller arranges volumes on a shelf. The wood has darkened with age and carries small traces of decades of use. He takes down a book, leafs through it briefly and places it somewhere else. A customer waits at the counter without appearing impatient.
In a studio, a sculptor works on a figure. Warm light falls through an open window onto the pavement. Dust moves through it while the woman uses a tool on a small area that is almost impossible to distinguish from the rest of the surface.
A watchmaker sits over an open case. His hands move so little that at first he could be mistaken for a motionless figure. Only after some time does he lift a pair of tweezers, insert a tiny component and examine the mechanism.
Two neighbours speak to one another across their balconies. Their words cannot be heard. One points towards the street, the other shakes his head and disappears briefly into his apartment. A little later, he returns carrying a cup.
In a child’s room, a boy builds a city from wooden blocks. He places a tall tower on a base that is too narrow. The tower collapses. For a moment, he looks at the scattered pieces. Then he begins arranging them again.
The small city inside the small city takes a different form on the second attempt.
No one explains why this scene was included. It does not need a message. Even so, it connects the boy with the people who created Miniatur Wunderland itself. He too imagines something, builds it, watches it fall and begins again.
An Intersection Without Importance
At an ordinary intersection, no one is waiting for anything remarkable to happen.
The light turns green, people begin to cross, a bicycle bell rings, and a pigeon lifts from the pavement.
A child laughs at something outside the visible scene. A woman stops briefly because the strap of her bag has come loose. A delivery van turns the corner, a taxi remains in the intersection too long, and someone behind it sounds the horn.
Nothing more happens. Yet places like this determine whether a city feels believable. If an extraordinary story unfolded on every corner, the extraordinary would lose its meaning. Life needs spaces in which nothing happens that demands an explanation.
Visitors do not have to stop there either. Most will continue walking and forget the intersection only moments later.
It has fulfilled its purpose all the same. It connects the larger scenes and prevents New York from becoming a sequence of carefully arranged attractions. A world does not become believable through its highlights alone.
It needs everyday life.
Rain Over Manhattan
Clouds begin to gather slowly. At first, only the light on the upper façades changes. Then the first drops fall onto the asphalt.
Umbrellas do not open all at once. Some people react immediately, others begin to walk faster, and a few move beneath awnings. A bicycle courier pulls up his hood without stopping. Outside a café, chairs are moved closer together and tables are pushed beneath the canopy.
The streets begin to shine. Traffic lights, shop windows and moving images are reflected in the puddles. Tyres leave narrow trails through the water, and at one intersection a taxi passes too close to the kerb and sends a spray across the pavement.
The rain changes the sounds of the city. Traffic becomes more muted, footsteps quicken, and for a while the steady fall of water covers individual voices. The smell of warm asphalt mixes with coffee, exhaust fumes and the damp air from the river.
An experience like this could not be created in the Miniatur Wunderland of 2035 through visible drops alone. Light, sound, moving air and perhaps even scent would have to work together. No single element could be so strong that visitors noticed the effect before they noticed the street.
It would be easy to stage rain as a technical sensation.
The more difficult achievement would be a street that, after only a few moments, simply feels like a street in the rain.
After a while, the light begins to brighten. The cloud cover breaks without disappearing completely. Sunlight falls across the wet pavements, and the reflections change. Umbrellas are closed, water continues to drip from the awnings, and isolated puddles remain on the roads.
A ginger tabby appears on an old fire escape. It jumps from one platform to the next, pauses briefly and looks down towards the street. A sound seems to startle it. The cat disappears between two brick façades.
Several blocks later, the same cat appears again. This time, it lies curled on a windowsill warmed by the sun after the rain. Only those who have seen both scenes recognise the small connection. For everyone else, the cat remains a single moment wherever it appears.
Times Square No Longer Has Anything to Prove
At Times Square, the city becomes denser once again. Screens cover the façades, and news alternates with art, advertising and entertainment.
Moving images wrap around the corners of buildings and change their perspective as the visitor moves. Three dimensional projections appear to emerge from the screens without ever truly leaving the surface. Shapes seem to travel across the square, vanish into one façade and reappear on another.
Some of the content responds to events in the city. Other images change with the time of day, the weather or the flow of traffic.
In 2035, no one regards this technology as the future. It belongs to Times Square just as illuminated signs and giant video screens once did. People arrange to meet beneath the images, hurry to work or try not to lose one another in the crowd. Tourists stop and point their cameras upwards. Most New Yorkers simply continue walking.
Even here, Miniatur Wunderland would have to resist the temptation to display every technical possibility at once. Times Square may overwhelm, but the effect has to come from the place itself. It is loud, dense and visually restless because that belongs to its history, not because a new projection system needs to be demonstrated.
Amid all the images, someone stands at the edge of the square without looking up.A woman is waiting for someone who is late. A street vendor arranges his goods. Two police officers speak to one another while, behind them, an enormous figure moves across a façade.
The largest images in the city are often only background to the people living within them.
The City Does Not End at Its Streets
New York is often described as a world of concrete, glass and steel. Yet the city also consists of islands, rivers, harbours and bridges. Anyone who shows only its street canyons reduces it more severely than any scale ever could.
The Brooklyn Bridge stretches across the East River. Pedestrians move along its upper level while vehicles use the connection between the boroughs below. Farther away, the Manhattan Bridge carries trains and road traffic across the water.
People stop along the promenades and look back towards the skyline. Some take photographs, while others sit on walls or benches. A runner passes them without turning his head. For him, the view is part of a route he may follow every morning.
Ferries cross between the bridges. Their deep horns travel across the water and merge with the sound of traffic. A light wind moves from the river into the streets. It carries the smell of the water with it, loses it between the buildings and, a few steps later, takes on coffee or warm bread.
New York changes its character depending on the shore from which it is viewed. From close by, Manhattan consists of streets, windows and people. Seen from the water, the city becomes a skyline again. The countless small events disappear into one great shape. Both views are true.
Neither is enough on its own.
Sounds Without a Beginning
Beneath the streets, the subway rumbles. From far away comes the horn of a ferry. A saxophone plays a few notes that become distorted between the buildings. Fragments of conversation appear and disappear before their meaning can be understood.
Somewhere, a pneumatic drill begins to work. A short time later, it falls silent. Tyres move across wet asphalt, a siren approaches, changes direction and slowly fades into the distance.
These sounds must not resemble a soundtrack that starts again after only a few minutes. They need intervals, overlaps and unpredictable changes. A visitor could stand in the same place during a second walk through the section and hear a different city.
Silence belongs there as well. Not the complete absence of sound, which would be unbelievable in New York, but brief spaces in which no single noise dominates attention. The murmur of the city remains without forcing itself into the foreground.
Sound would extend the spatial illusion. A helicopter can already seem to have disappeared behind a building before the model itself has left the visitor’s view. A train approaches beneath the street before it becomes visible. A ferry can be heard while it is still hidden behind another ship. The physical room remains limited.
The space created by sound reaches farther.
Every Visitor Enters a Different City
One person will notice the aeroplanes first. Another will remain at the harbour and follow the ships. Someone waits for the historical scene at Ellis Island without knowing that it may not appear that day.
A child discovers the cat on the fire escape. At the same time, the parents are watching the subway beneath the street. A technically minded visitor tries to understand how the vehicles move without a visible track. Beside them, someone else studies a lit window in which there is little more to see than a table laid for a meal.
For some, the skyline will remain the strongest image. Others will later remember the watchmaker, the boy with the wooden blocks or the doorman outside the Plaza Hotel.
The model does not prescribe the order in which these things are meant to matter. Its major attractions are visible enough to capture attention. The smaller stories wait for a particular way of looking to find them.
This is more than richness of detail. A world feels inexhaustible when it offers every person a different selection. Not everything has to remain hidden, but nothing should be explained completely from a single perspective.
New York never reveals everything. Even a visitor who remains for hours takes away only a fragment. While one street is being observed, another continues to live without them. As soon as they turn around, something begins behind them that they will never see.
The city therefore possesses a future beyond the immediate moment. One can imagine the baker later serving customers, the family leaving the house and the boy continuing to build his new city. None of this has to be shown.
A convincingly begun action is enough.
The Most Invisible Technology Would Be the Greatest Achievement
Behind this city would lie a technical world of almost unimaginable complexity. Aeroplanes, ships, vehicles, trains, light, weather, projections, sounds and countless small scenes would all have to be connected with one another. One system could not constantly interfere with another. Many processes would need to remain free enough to avoid obvious repetition.
The model would have to operate reliably for hours. Movements that look convincing in a brief test might quickly reach their limits in everyday use. Every additional degree of freedom increases the number of possible failures. A vehicle allowed to change its line may react differently from what was expected. Weather effects alter the lighting. Projections must remain aligned with real surfaces even though visitors view them from different angles.
Developing such a world would probably take years. It would require people from fields that today may still rarely work together. Mechanics, software, lighting design, model making, projection, acoustics and architecture would have to influence one another.
Even so, visitors should notice very little of it.
The greatest technical achievement would not lie in making its complexity visible. It would lie in allowing a person to forget, for a few minutes, that they were standing in front of technology at all.
They do not see sensors. They see a taxi avoiding a bicycle. They do not hear a spatially controlled sound source. They hear a train beneath the street. They do not recognise the connection between real water and projection.
Before them lies the harbour of New York. The technology would not have disappeared. It would have found its place.
When Hamburg Disappears for a Moment
The visit has already lasted far longer than the person originally intended. Behind them lie the harbour, the broad avenues and the narrower streets. They have watched aeroplanes take off, experienced rain over Manhattan and perhaps caught a brief glimpse of people arriving at Ellis Island more than a century ago.
Other visitors are still standing around them. The building remains in Hamburg, the scale is still 1:87, and behind every movement are machines, computers and people.
Yet for a brief moment, this knowledge loses its importance. The harbour seems farther away than it can possibly be. The street canyon appears higher than the room in which it was built. Sounds come from places that ought to lie beyond the actual walls. Behind a window lives a person only a few millimetres tall, and still one wants to know what they will do next.
The visitor has not forgotten that they are looking at a miniature. Part of them continues to know it. But another part accepts the world according to its own rules for the fraction of a moment.
Hamburg does not truly disappear. The scale does not dissolve. Both merely retreat from attention. Perhaps this would be the greatest imaginable development of Miniatur Wunderland. Not a model displaying even more technical effects, and not a city containing every famous building as completely as possible.
The achievement would lie in creating a world that feels large enough to draw the person standing before it inside for a few minutes. Not because it overwhelms them.
Because it continues to live without them.
The Future Dissolves Again
Eventually, the route continues. The sounds of Manhattan grow quieter, the buildings recede, and the light changes beyond a bend. Once more, the horn of a ferry travels through the room. On a rooftop, the older man waters his plants, the baker places fresh trays in the display, and somewhere beneath the streets a subway train enters the next station.
The city does not stop simply because the visitor is leaving.
With every step, however, New York loses something of its presence. The skyline disappears between other landscapes, the sound of traffic becomes the murmur of people inside Miniatur Wunderland once again, and the year 2035 returns to where it came from.
An idea. None of this is an announced construction project. No one knows whether New York will ever be created in this form. The development of Miniatur Wunderland may take an entirely different direction. Some ideas might prove technically unreasonable, others impossible within the available space, and some may simply not belong in this place at all.
The vision was not meant to predict the future. It was intended to show what becomes possible in thought when the history of Miniatur Wunderland is continued.
Not its size. Its attitude.
Almost every technical achievement that now appears natural began with an idea that was larger than the knowledge available at the time. Formula 1, the airport, moving ships and the Drake Passage were not merely the next sensible steps in a predetermined plan. They required new solutions and people willing to work for a long time without knowing the outcome.
A vision of the future begins in the same way. At first, it may reach farther than the means available to make it real. Later, it has to withstand questions. It must become smaller, more precise or entirely different. Some parts disappear. Others reveal their true significance only during the work.
Imagination is therefore not the opposite of reality. It is a way of suggesting something to reality that it has never known before.
Miniatur Wunderland began with such a suggestion. A spontaneous idea in Zurich was examined, changed and connected with the abilities of many people. What began as the largest model railway in the world became something that can no longer be described completely by that name.
Perhaps the next great development will not consist of building another famous city. It may instead change the way spaces tell stories. Landscapes could reveal different periods, respond to weather or change according to the position from which a person views them.
What matters would not be whether the technology is new. Novelty alone has no value. Only when a technical possibility carries an idea, makes a landscape more believable or allows visitors to see in a different way does it acquire meaning within this world.
The vision of New York therefore does not end with a list of possible effects. It leads back to a question that stood at the beginning of this article.
What has to happen for an idea to become more than an impressive vision? The answer does not lie in the future. It has been working in Hamburg for years.
The Model Shows the Result, Not the Work
Anyone visiting Miniatur Wunderland first sees landscapes, buildings, trains, vehicles, ships and aeroplanes. Everything is designed to be perceived as part of a coherent world. Cables disappear, control systems remain out of sight, mechanical elements are concealed, and maintenance takes place wherever possible without interrupting the experience.
The visible result depends on a large part of its creation remaining invisible.
A mountain does not reveal how often its shape was changed. A building does not show which drawings were rejected. A vehicle carries no memory of the attempts in which it stopped, lost its route or moved in a way that was not convincing enough.
The people behind the model also disappear into their work. A figure was painted, a tree placed, a control system programmed, a defective component replaced. Later, the visitor sees only a landscape in which everything appears to belong together.
This invisibility can create a false impression. The more effortless a work appears, the easier it becomes to underestimate the labour required to create it. Perfection erases the traces of its own making.
The films, construction diaries and public glimpses offered by Miniatur Wunderland open part of this hidden level. They show workshops, unfinished models and people discussing problems for which no solution has yet been found.
This changes the way the finished work is seen. A race in Monaco remains a race. At the same time, one knows that years of technical development are contained within its movement. A ship crossing the Drake Passage is still only a few centimetres long. Yet it carries the collaboration of different teams and several generations of a technical solution within it.
Knowledge does not destroy the sense of wonder here. It gives it a second direction.
One can delight in the convincing movement of an aeroplane while also seeing the people behind it. One can follow a ship without understanding its control system and still sense that its calm progress is the result of countless restless attempts.
Perhaps this is one of the particular qualities of the place. The work remains accessible even to those who know nothing about how it was created. Anyone who looks more closely, however, discovers a second model behind the visible world.
It consists of decisions, detours, professions, conversations and experience. This second model cannot be visited in full. It exists in the minds and hands of the people who work there.
None of These People Could Have Built the Whole Thing Alone
The history of Miniatur Wunderland is often associated with Frederik and Gerrit Braun. That is understandable. Without Frederik’s idea and Gerrit’s technical scrutiny, there would have been no beginning. Stephan Hertz brought another perspective that was essential to the establishment and stability of the company.
Yet even the first sections could not have emerged from the work of only a few people. With every new project, the knowledge required became more extensive. Model making, mechanics, electronics, software, lighting, sound, architecture, projection and many areas of craftsmanship had to be connected. No single person could fully master that entire relationship.
This is not a weakness of the project. It belongs to its inner structure. A work of this size can exist only when people give up the desire to control everything themselves. They have to hand over responsibility while trusting that others will treat their part with the same seriousness.
Trust does not mean that everyone works independently and the result is assembled by chance at the end. The different areas must constantly respond to one another. A visual decision may have technical consequences. A new control system may change which movement is possible at all. The available space forces architecture and landscape to accept compromises. Every thought touches other thoughts.
No contribution can therefore be considered in complete isolation. A model maker creates a scene, but its lighting changes its effect. A technician develops a movement that becomes believable only through its surroundings. A programmer controls processes whose meaning comes from a story imagined by someone else.
The finished work therefore has no single signature. It carries many.
Some can be recognised clearly. Others disappear almost entirely within the shared form. Creative projects are often reduced to one person to whom the achievement can be attributed. A single name is easier to tell than a network of relationships. It fits onto a poster, into a headline and into the brief story of success.
Miniatur Wunderland resists this simplification. Its founders are important, but they do not explain the thousands of small scenes, technical solutions and craft decisions added over the decades.
The employees alone do not explain the work either. Without premises, financing, organisation and decisions at the entrepreneurial level, their abilities could not form a coherent model. Every level needs the others.
The work is larger than every individual contribution without diminishing the value of any of them.
Differences Do Not Have to Disappear
Collaboration is often confused with harmony. A good team is then imagined as a community in which everyone shares the same vision and conflict occurs as rarely as possible. Such an image is appealing, but not very believable.
People see problems differently. A technician recognises risks that may initially seem unimportant to a designer. A model maker may want to change a scene whose consequences for control systems or maintenance would be considerable. Entrepreneurial responsibility imposes limits that can be frustrating for a creative idea.
Frederik and Gerrit Braun did not respond to the original idea in the same way either. Their differences were not an obstacle that had to be overcome. They made the idea more resilient.
A project loses strength when every critical question is treated as a lack of enthusiasm. It would be equally dangerous to examine every unusual idea for so long that only a safe and ordinary version remained.
The difficulty does not lie in avoiding differences. It lies in allowing them to become productive.
This requires a shared direction, but not complete agreement. People must be allowed to disagree without losing sight of the purpose. An idea must be allowed to change without its originator experiencing that change as a personal defeat. Criticism must be more precise than simple rejection, and enthusiasm more resilient than the desire to be right.
Such conditions cannot be created through a mission statement. They emerge in daily work and can be damaged at any time. A single mistake used publicly against a person can have more effect than ten speeches about trust.
Openness visible from the outside is no proof that everything always works well internally. No company with hundreds of employees provides everyone with the same experience. People experience leadership, collaboration and pressure differently. A project documented in public does not allow a complete judgement of the entire organisation.
Even so, the recurring examples matter. Employees explain developments of their own. Mistakes and technical problems are not hidden completely. Ideas can be pursued over long periods even when their outcome remains uncertain. International partners contribute a perspective that is not expected merely to carry out instructions already defined elsewhere.
These decisions do not reveal a perfect culture. They reveal the kind of culture that was sought and, at important moments, genuinely made possible.
Mistakes Are Not a Philosophy
Hardly any company today would openly claim that mistakes are always undesirable. The idea of a positive attitude towards failure has become part of the familiar language of modern organisations.
That is precisely why the phrase has lost much of its meaning.
It sounds good to describe mistakes as opportunities to learn. The situation becomes more difficult when an attempt has taken months, consumed money and produced no useful result. Only then does it become clear whether the willingness to learn is more than a reassuring phrase.
Miniatur Wunderland cannot romanticise mistakes either. A technical failure during daily operation creates additional work, interrupts processes and may disappoint visitors. Poor planning costs material and time. A problem does not become valuable simply because people later speak openly about it.
Some mistakes lead to insight. Others could have been avoided. Still others remain nothing more than lost effort. The decisive question is therefore not whether mistakes are good or bad. It is what happens after them.
Do people search for the cause or first for someone to blame? Can a person admit early that a solution is not working, or do they wait until the problem can no longer be hidden? Can a project be ended without everyone involved having to defend the value of their work?
In the developments documented publicly, it is striking how matter of factly failed attempts are discussed. Problems are described, components shown and assumptions corrected. The people involved do not have to transform every failure into a grand lesson about life.
This restraint feels more believable than any enthusiastic celebration of mistakes. A failed attempt is, at first, simply a failed attempt. Only the way people examine it determines whether knowledge can emerge from it.
The Formula 1 development could continue for eleven years because a problem was not automatically treated as proof that the entire idea was wrong. At the same time, every new approach had to demonstrate whether it genuinely led further. Persistence did not mean repeating the same solution again and again. It meant holding on to the goal while changing the paths towards it.
The roller coaster followed a similar pattern. An earlier technical dead end did not become a final judgement. The idea remained alive until a development from another project opened a new direction.
This reveals a culture of learning that does not lie in the mistake itself. It lies in the memory of the company. An unsolved problem can remain there for a long time without consuming attention every day. When knowledge or technology changes, it can be examined again. Some ideas do not need greater perseverance.
They need a later moment.
Work That No One Notices
Visitors mainly notice what moves, lights up or tells a story. Yet a large part of the daily work consists of preserving precisely that condition.
Trains must be checked, vehicles maintained and worn components replaced. Dust settles on landscapes, machinery changes through constant use, water surfaces need care, and electrical systems age. A model that operates for many hours every day is not a static work of art.
The open control centre makes some of this work visible. Monitors, control systems and employees remind visitors that the miniature world does not function by itself. Behind every apparently independent process lies human attention.
When everything works, visitors notice very little of it. A train moves, an aeroplane takes off, and the lights change to night at the right moment. Maintenance becomes visible only when it is missing.
This invisibility affects many professions. Cleaning, repairs, visitor services, organisation and administration belong to Miniatur Wunderland just as much as model making and technical development. They do not create a new themed world, but they create the conditions in which people can experience one.
A place visited by millions of people consists of more than its creative centre. It requires ticket sales, safety, catering, communication and countless everyday processes. Mistakes, conflicts and decisions arise there as well, most of them barely visible from the outside.
A romantic image of Miniatur Wunderland might overlook this work. It would show only people enthusiastically building small landscapes and inventing unusual technical solutions.
But passion does not replace a work schedule. Imagination does not organise crowds of visitors, and even the finest model cannot repair itself.
The entrepreneurial side is therefore not an unwelcome addition to the creative work. It supports it. The challenge lies in ensuring that it does not become the only standard by which everything is judged.
A company can function perfectly on an organisational level and still lose what makes its work distinctive. A creative project can just as easily collapse under the weight of its own disorder. Miniatur Wunderland had to find a path between these two dangers, and that path changed with every expansion.
Healthy growth also means considering the invisible areas. More visitors require more infrastructure. New worlds increase the need for maintenance. Greater technical complexity creates new dependencies. An extension is successful only when it can not merely be opened, but operated for many years. The spectacular depends on the reliable.
Success Changes the Nature of the Risk
At the beginning, the greatest risk was that no one would be interested in the idea. Later, the challenge lay in finding enough space, people and money for new worlds. As success grew, the risk changed again.
A well known company can begin to repeat itself. What once worked becomes a safe formula. Visitors expect the next increase, the media look for new superlatives, and every expansion is measured against everything that came before it.
Under such conditions, success can narrow the imagination. An idea is no longer judged by whether it belongs to the project, but by whether it appears larger than the previous one. The technology has to become more spectacular, the section more extensive and the opening more effective in public.
Miniatur Wunderland is not free from this pressure. Monaco was measured by standards created by earlier sections themselves. South America had to look different from Europe while still meeting the same expectations. Every new world faces demands that did not yet exist in 2001.
That is precisely why restraint matters. Not every technical possibility has to be used. A quiet landscape can exist beside a spectacular airport. A motionless figure has its place beside a freely moving racing car.
If every new world emerged only through escalation, the model would lose its inner variety. Attention depends on contrast. A highlight can have an effect only when not every square metre is trying to become one.
The decision to work internationally on South America represents another form of development. It does not merely increase technical complexity. It broadens the way of seeing. The improvement of the Drake Passage makes an existing scene more believable without turning it into a larger attraction.
The rebuilding of the fairground was not simply an expansion either. It raised the question of whether a successful section still corresponded to what the people involved had since become capable of imagining.
Decisions like these protect a project from repeating its own history in ever larger form.
People Come, Leave and Still Remain
A company that grows over decades also changes the people who work within it.
People begin working there, develop abilities and later leave again. Some remain for many years, while others contribute only to a particular section. The work carries all these movements within it.
A landscape may have been created by people who no longer work for the company. A technical solution may be maintained and developed further by later teams. A method can remain in use even though almost no one remembers who introduced it.
Work outlives its creator in different ways. Sometimes it remains visible in a building, a figure or a landscape. More often, it continues through knowledge. One person shows another a technique, explains a mistake or changes a way of working. Later, that knowledge is passed on again.
With every transfer, it changes. No one passes on experience completely unchanged. New people add thoughts of their own, leave certain things behind or recognise connections that were not visible before.
Miniatur Wunderland is therefore not the work of one fixed group that has remained unchanged since the first day. It is a continuing relationship into which people enter and from which they later depart.
This change can be difficult. When experienced employees leave, knowledge disappears that cannot be documented completely. Craftsmanship consists of movements, decisions and a feeling for materials that can only partly be translated into instructions.
A growing company must therefore do more than recruit new people. It has to find ways of passing on experience without reducing the next generation to mere imitation. New employees need to learn how something works. At the same time, they must have the freedom to do it differently later.
Otherwise, a company may preserve its knowledge while losing its ability to develop.
The Visitors Grow Alongside the Place
The people standing before the model change as well. Children who could barely see over the barrier during an early visit are now adults.
Some return with children of their own. They are no longer entering the same place. Some of the landscapes have remained familiar, while others have been altered or newly created. Sections that did not yet exist during the first visit have since become a natural part of the route. The model has grown during the same years as its visitors.
This creates personal layers of time. An older section may recall a visit whose details have long since become blurred. Someone may still remember who was with them without remembering which landscape impressed them most at the time.
A new world appears beside this memory. The place remains familiar and becomes strange at the same time. Such a connection is rare. Many attractions change very little. People return years later and find essentially the same place. Others are renewed so completely that everything they remembered has disappeared.
Miniatur Wunderland moves between these two possibilities. Early sections remain visible while new ones are added. Some areas are modernised, others rebuilt. The past is still present without preventing the whole place from moving forward.
For returning visitors, the model can therefore become a kind of shared biography. It does not merely show what the company has created over the years. It reminds people that their own lives have continued as well.
A child may notice only the trains during a first visit. As an adult, the same person may become interested in the technology or in the people behind the model. Later still, they may pay more attention to what their own child discovers.
The place remains the same and takes on a different meaning in every stage of life.
There Is No Final View
The size of Miniatur Wunderland is often described through numbers. Kilometres of track, figures, buildings, working hours and visitor numbers provide some idea of the dimensions the project has reached.
Yet even the most precise figures cannot explain why someone may feel, after several hours, that they have still seen only a fraction of it.
The model is not merely large. It has been created in a way that repeatedly causes the eye to lose its direction. A movement attracts attention, a small scene holds it, and while this happens, events elsewhere pass unnoticed.
Even a complete walk through the exhibition is therefore never truly complete. It records only the path taken by one particular person on one particular day.
During the next visit, the light may be different. A technical sequence may begin earlier or later, other visitors may be standing in different places, and the person returning brings new interests with them. A scene overlooked before may suddenly become important.
The work does not change only through reconstruction. It changes with the people who look at it. Perhaps this is the deeper meaning of its impossibility to be taken in all at once. It does not force anyone to return. It simply leaves enough unseen for another visit not to become a repetition.
A place that could be understood completely in a single visit would soon feel finished, however large it might be. Miniatur Wunderland refuses this kind of completion. It does not conceal secrets in any dramatic sense. It simply contains more details, layers of time and directions of attention than one person can experience at once.
The final view is therefore always provisional.
What This Article Is Really About
At the beginning, I thought I was writing about an extraordinary model railway. About trains, landscapes, airports and technical developments that make things possible at a scale of 1:87 which once seemed almost unimaginable.
The longer I spent with Miniatur Wunderland, the farther that centre of attention began to shift.
The model remained important. Without it, there would be neither the people whose work I am writing about nor the questions that grew from it. Yet it became something else as well: the visible expression of an invisible collaboration.
Every mountain, every building and every movement shows that people shared an idea. No one person could make it real alone. Others had to examine it, alter it and translate it into their own work.
The result therefore belongs to no one completely. Even the founders could not have known at the beginning which ideas later employees would contribute. The people working on new landscapes today do not know every development that may one day build upon their work.
At some point, a project of this size moves beyond the imagination of any individual person. It grows from decisions made in different years and under different conditions.
Miniatur Wunderland is therefore more than a world in miniature. In condensed form, it shows how human work can grow into something vast without being controlled by a single person.
It requires imagination, but also doubt. It requires technical precision and the freedom to pursue a thought that may initially appear unreasonable. It requires financial stability without reducing every decision to its immediately measurable value.
Above all, it requires time. Not the kind of time that simply passes while people wait for a result. It requires working time, learning time and the long duration in which individual experience gradually becomes shared knowledge.
Not a Romantic Story
It would be easy to turn Miniatur Wunderland into a beautiful story about passion, teamwork and the success of a great idea. Such a story would not be entirely wrong.
It would simply be too smooth. There is financial pressure there as well, along with conflict, exhaustion, poor decisions and tasks that no one completes out of enthusiasm. People do not work with the same joy every day. Projects take longer than planned, technology fails, and some ideas are abandoned after a great deal of work.
A company with many employees cannot exist through friendship and shared enthusiasm alone. It needs hierarchies, decisions and rules. Not every decision is experienced in the same way by everyone, nor regarded as correct.
Anyone writing about a company culture from the outside has to respect this limit. Public films, interviews and reports reveal a great deal, but not everything. They offer glimpses, not a complete view from within.
Even so, decisions can reveal something.
A successful section is rebuilt. A technical development is given eleven years. Employees speak about their own work. Partners from another country alter the way a continent is seen. The unfinished remains visible even though it would be easier to show only success.
These examples are not proof of an ideal world. They are indications of an attitude that became effective at important moments. Perhaps that is enough.
A company culture does not have to be perfect in order to teach us something. It has to show that decisions can be made differently from what the fastest or safest path would demand.
What Remains of an Idea
In the summer of 2000, Frederik Braun could not know which landscapes would open in 2024. Gerrit could not plan a technical development whose necessary conditions did not yet exist. Stephan Hertz could not foresee the size the company would one day reach. The original idea survived all these changes because it did not have to remain unchanged.
If Miniatur Wunderland had been nothing more than the execution of a fixed plan, it would eventually have reached its conclusion. The largest model railway in the world would have been completed, kept or lost its record, and from then on would mainly have been preserved.
Instead, the meaning of the project changed. New landscapes brought different stories, technology became a means of creating spatial illusion, and international collaboration expanded the idea of who could take part in building this world.
The core did not survive because every decision remained faithful to the beginning. It survived because the original curiosity was never replaced by a final state.
Perhaps this is the most difficult form of continuity. Not holding on to an earlier shape, but changing without becoming arbitrary.
Miniatur Wunderland today is no longer the project imagined in the year 2000. It is larger, more complex and, in many respects, less predictable. Even so, something of that moment outside the shop window in Zurich can still be recognised in every new technical idea.
Someone sees something and wonders what it might become.
The Final View Is Not of the Model
At the end of a visit, people step back out into Hamburg’s warehouse district.
Some immediately begin talking about what they have seen. They compare their favourite sections, show one another photographs or try to explain a technical movement. Others remain quieter. Perhaps they are exhausted by the abundance, or perhaps they are carrying a single scene with them for which they have not yet found words.
Behind them, the model continues to operate. Trains move, ships follow their routes, and faults are repaired in the control centre without most visitors ever knowing they occurred. In the workshops, people work on a section that will not become part of the exhibition for months or even years.
The place itself has no awareness of its visitors. The people within it do.
They did not build this world merely to look at it themselves. Every landscape is directed towards people who will one day stand before it and discover something. Yet the makers cannot determine what that something will be.
One visitor may later remember Monaco, another the airport. A child may continue talking for days about a tiny figure almost no one else noticed. An older woman may carry home a memory connected to Miniatur Wunderland only through a small landscape.
The work does not end with the object that was built. It continues inside people. That cannot be measured, and perhaps it should not be. Visitor numbers reveal economic success. Reviews describe satisfaction, criticism and expectation. The length of a visit can be recorded. But no system can fully understand why someone remained standing before one particular scene.
The most important effect of a work often takes place where its creator can no longer reach it.
A Possibility of Human Work
Miniatur Wunderland does not prove that every great idea can be realised. Many ideas fail despite courage, skill and hard work. Some are technically impossible, others financially unsustainable. Still others lose the meaning from which they originally emerged during the process of being brought to life.
Good collaboration does not guarantee success either. Trust can be disappointed, decisions can be wrong, and long periods of work can end without a result. The value of this place therefore does not lie in a simple formula for success.
It reveals a possibility. People can think differently and still work on the same creation. Criticism does not have to destroy an idea. Financial responsibility and imagination do not have to exclude one another completely. A mistake can become visible without the person behind it immediately disappearing.
Experience can be passed on without restricting what comes next to repetition. A company can grow while still trying to preserve the individuality that cannot be produced through efficiency.
None of this happens by itself. Every one of these possibilities has to be created again in daily life. Under pressure, in conflict and on days when enthusiasm alone is no longer enough.
Perhaps that is precisely why Miniatur Wunderland has continued to occupy my thoughts after so many years. The model does not show a perfect world. It shows what people can build when they give an idea enough space while remaining willing to question it again and again.
In the end, the eye does not remain with the trains, the mountains or the aeroplanes taking off.
It remains with the people who made all of it possible, even though none of them could have known at the beginning where their shared path would lead. And somewhere in Hamburg’s warehouse district, a new design is probably already lying on a table. Still unfinished, perhaps technically excessive and full of unanswered questions.
A future needs nothing more at the beginning.
